Improper overtaking leaves 4 injured, goods damaged in Kapiri

FOUR people are nursing injuries while
several assorted goods were damaged after a Sino Howo truck collided head-on with another truck along the Great North Road in Kapiri Mposhi District following an improper overtaking manoeuvre by its driver.

The driver of the Sino Howo truck, which was travelling from south to north of Kapiri town, attempted to overtake improperly before losing control and colliding head-on with a Man Truck travelling in the opposite direction, leaving four people injured and the two trucks extensively damaged.

According to Central Province Police Commissioner Lemekani Chirwa, the accident happened yesterday around 13:40 hours at Kambowa area, about 13 kilometres south of Kapiri Mposhi town.

Chirwa said the accident involved a Man Truck and trailer bearing registration numbers ADE 4453 ZM and BCC 4297 ZM belonging to BHL, and a Sino Howo truck and trailer bearing registration numbers AIC 3620 ZM and AIC 3606 ZM belonging to Shaan Carriers.

He said the Man Truck, which was carrying copper cathodes, had its horse extensively damaged while the container carrying the copper was also damaged.

Chirwa said the Sino Howo truck, which was carrying assorted goods, also sustained extensive damage to the horse and the front part of the trailer.

He said the Man Truck was being driven by Gift Simukonda, aged 48, of Mindolo in Kitwe, who sustained cuts on the head and bruised hands, while his passenger Fedel Mutoya, aged 48, of Chimwemwe in Kitwe, sustained a cut on the right hand.

According to police, the driver of the Sino Howo truck, identified as Lameck Tabashubi of Lusaka’s 10 Miles area, sustained cuts on the head, neck, ribs and hands.

He said Tabashubi’s passenger, Brighton Loziwa, aged 20, also sustained cuts on the head and hand.

"All the victims are admitted to Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital," said Chirwa.

He added that police have since launched investigations into the accident.

VICE PRESIDENT MUTALE NALUMANGO'S HELICOPTER CRASHES

A plane carrying Zambia's Vice President, Dr. W. K. Mutale Nalumango, has crashed shortly after take-off in Nakonde.

Preliminary information indicates the aircraft went down about 50 metres from the ground moments after departing.

While sources close to the incident suggest there were about eight people on board, authorities have not yet confirmed the number of occupants.

The condition of the Vice President and the other passengers remains unknown.

Dr. Nalumango arrived in Nakonde at around 08:00 hours today, where she met various stakeholders before addressing a public rally at a local school.

She was scheduled to travel to Isoka District for another rally as part of her ongoing working tour of Muchinga Province, which began on Sunday.

Security has been tightened around the crash site, and members of the media have not been allowed to get close. Chete FM is at the scene in Nakonde and will provide verified updates as more information becomes available.
