STATEMENT ON THE ALLEGED INCIDENT OF POLITICAL VIOLENCE IN LUAMPA DISTRICT
I begin by expressing my deepest concern and unequivocal condemnation of the alleged acts of political violence reportedly perpetrated by political cadres in Luampa District, Western Province, during the ongoing campaigns ahead of next Thursday’s General Election.
The unfortunate events of Tuesday should serve as a moment of sober reflection for all political stakeholders. Violence has no place in a democratic society and must never be allowed to undermine the peaceful and credible electoral process that our nation has worked so hard to build.
As the immediate past Member of Parliament for Luampa and a candidate seeking another mandate, I wish to state that the people of Luampa have, for generations, been known for their tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and respect for differing political opinions. Our district has never been associated with political violence, which makes these reports particularly disturbing.
I therefore urge the Zambia Police Service and all relevant law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough, impartial, and expeditious investigations, and to ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice without fear or favour.
As the United Party for National Development and as the parliamentary candidate for Luampa, we remain fully committed to the principles of peace, democracy, and the rule of law. We have conducted our campaigns responsibly, peacefully, and strictly in accordance with the campaign timetable issued by the Electoral Commission of Zambia. We firmly believe that elections must be free, fair, transparent, and credible.
Our position is consistent with the clear and unwavering directive of President Hakainde Hichilema, who has repeatedly stated that violence, intimidation, and lawlessness by any political party, candidate, or supporter will not be tolerated under his leadership. Those who choose violence do so on their own accord and not in the name of the values our party upholds.
The reported acts of violence are regrettable and deserve condemnation in the strongest possible terms. Those responsible must be held accountable in accordance with the law.
It is equally important that investigations establish the full truth surrounding these incidents, to prevent misinformation, manipulation, or politically motivated propaganda from misleading the public or undermining the progress and unity our nation has achieved over the past five years.
I commend President Hakainde Hichilema for his consistent and principled stance against political violence. Throughout his political journey, even during periods when he was subjected to provocation and adversity, he has continued to preach peace, restraint, and respect for the rule of law. That example continues to inspire confidence in his leadership and demonstrates that true leadership is measured not by retaliation, but by integrity and commitment to peace.
I therefore call upon all political parties, candidates, and their supporters to reject violence in all its forms and to embrace peaceful competition based on ideas, policies, and mutual respect.
Let us safeguard the peace, unity, and democratic values that define our nation. Let us protect the future of Zambia and that of our children by promoting politics anchored on integrity, tolerance, respect, and the peaceful exchange of ideas.
May God bless Luampa, and may God bless the Republic of Zambia.
Hon. Makozo Chikote,
Luampa East Aspiring MP.
