🚬 For countless hours each day, Emperor Franz Joseph sat at his desk, managing the affairs of a vast empire. There was one companion that was rarely far from his side: a pipe.

While smoking was common among gentlemen of his time, Franz Joseph was known to be an especially devoted smoker. Even as he grew older, he was reluctant to give up the habit. Instead, doctors prescribed a milder to***co, and he began smoking cigarillos inserted into pipes like this one.

In case you wondered: the pipe in this photo is no replica. It is an original pipe used by the Emperor, exhibited at his desk in the Imperial Apartments.

Behind the imperial palace was a world of untold stories and the people who made daily life at court possible. The work of thousands of them ensured that the palace ran smoothly, every day. 👑

For those who entered imperial service, a position at court meant far more than just a job. It offered remarkable security in an uncertain 19th century world: servants were rarely dismissed, received accommodation, and could even look forward to a pension after years of service. Benefits that were exceptional for the time.

With 1,500 to 2,000 servants working in countless different roles, the imperial household was a carefully organised world of its own. From daily routines to grand ceremonies, every single person contributed to the rhythm of court life.

Could it be - is there a hidden tropical paradise inside the Hofburg? 🌿🦩

On your tour through the Imperial Apartments, you'll find yourself surrounded by exotic landscapes, lush greenery, and even flamingos in the Bergl Rooms. Created around 1766 by Johann Wenzel Bergl, the extraordinary murals on the walls transform these premises into an imagined world far beyond Vienna.

On hot summer days, the view almost feels like a journey to a faraway coast - without ever leaving the palace. 🌴

Did you already visit the Audience Waiting Room at the Hofburg? Coming from the Emperor's Staircase, visitors entered this room - while the Trabanten Guard kept watch day and night. Their task was protecting the imperial family and maintaining order within the palace.

During the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph, five guards from the monarch's military household were stationed here at all times to keep the head of the state safe.

The skirt and stole of Elisabeth's Engagement Party Dress are decorated with fascinating Arabic embroidery. Translated, the inscription reads a specific promise - or sign, if we want to interpret it this way.
