👷‍♀️𝗪𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 👷👷‍♂️

Our Parks and Gardens crews work hard every day to maintain public amenities right across the Burdekin.

With a small team servicing a large number of facilities, they do an outstanding job in often challenging and unpleasant conditions - responding to issues quickly, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring essential supplies are available for our community.

Unfortunately, amenities can be impacted 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙮 after being serviced. At times, toilet paper is also stolen from facilities, which creates additional challenges for our crews and impacts other users.

When issues are reported, our teams attend as quickly as possible, including after hours when required.

These roles aren’t easy, but our staff remain committed to delivering the best possible service for the community - and we thank them for it.

We encourage residents to report any issues using the 𝗦𝗻𝗮𝗽 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽 or by 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 on (07)4783 9800, so they can be addressed promptly. We also ask that everyone treats our public facilities - and the people who maintain them - 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩.

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀

Burdekin Shire Council is proud to celebrate the success of the Young Digital Mentors Program, bringing together young people and senior community members to strengthen digital skills and social connection across the Burdekin.

Delivered by Burdekin Library, the program sees young mentors support senior participants to build confidence using everyday technology such as smartphones and tablets.

The Burdekin was the first location in Queensland to pilot this forward-thinking initiative, originally developed by the State Library of Queensland. The program continues to be supported by the State Library of Queensland and the eSafety Commission, with mentor training delivered in partnership with Creative Bytes.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the program showcases the strength of community connections in the region.

“Programs like Young Digital Mentors not only build valuable digital skills, they also bring generations together in a meaningful way,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“It’s fantastic to see our young people stepping up to support others, while also developing confidence, leadership and communication skills of their own.”

Participants have praised the program for boosting confidence and providing a supportive learning environment, with many now more confident navigating their devices and staying connected.

Council thanks all mentors and participants for their involvement in creating a more connected and digitally inclusive Burdekin community.

📢 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲: 𝗕𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 – 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

Burdekin Shire Council advises that a contractor will be conducting surveys of residential bin contents throughout June 2026.

These surveys will help Council improve waste services, including bin systems, recycling programs and education to reduce waste going to landfill.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁:
• Randomly selected households will be included
• Bins will be visually assessed (e.g. fullness and condition)
• Bin contents may be collected from the kerbside on your usual collection day
• Waste will be sorted and weighed at a facility before being disposed of or recycled as usual

🔹 No action is required from residents
🔹 Households will not be notified in advance to ensure accurate results
🔹 All information is collected anonymously and reported in aggregated form only

Careers are not always straightforward — and some of the best opportunities can come from unexpected places.

At Pathways & Possibilities: Supporting Your Child’s Future, local speakers Dr Gerard Chandler, Tayla Heuir, Lauren Raitelli and Austin Dewar will share their own journeys through school, study and career decision-making.

From diesel fitting to owning Burdekin Chiropractic, from high school to Project Engineer at Burdekin Shire Council, from JCU student to Graduate Registered Nurse and Midwife with Queensland Health and from high school to 3rd year apprentice, their stories highlight the many different pathways available across regional Queensland.

Families can also connect directly with industry, training providers and employers following the presentations.

𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗸𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗚𝗠𝗔 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲

Burdekin Shire Council has been recognised at the 2026 LGMA Awards for Excellence, with the Macroalgal Facility showcasing innovative, sustainable wastewater treatment that protects the Great Barrier Reef and delivers long-term value for the community.

The facility was acknowledged as a leading example of innovation in local government, demonstrating how regional councils can deliver smarter, more sustainable infrastructure outcomes.

Delivered in partnership with RegenAqua and Pacific Biotechnologies, the project integrates a macroalgal bioremediation system into Council’s existing wastewater treatment process, providing a cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative to traditional methods.
