The Burdekin Shire Council covers an area of approximately 5053 square kilometres and is bordered by Townsville City Council to the north, Charters Towers Regional Council to the west and Whitsunday Regional Council to the south. The Shire has an estimated resident population of approximately 17,500 (Census 2011) and is categorised as a Rural Agricultural Very Large (RAV) Local Authority under the

Australian classification of Local Governments. On April 1, 1903, all Divisions became Shires under the Local Authorities' Act of 1902 and the Council of the Shire of Ayr was created. In 1982 the name was changed to Burdekin Shire Council to more accurately reflect the geographic area covered by the Council. The Burdekin Shire Council is committed to working with the community to create an inclusive, welcoming, and healthy environment that offers a high quality of liveability for residents that is underpinned by a productive and diverse economy.

🔋 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗺𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆: 𝗔 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 🪫

Burdekin Shire Council is reminding residents that items with embedded batteries should never be placed in household waste or recycling bins.

Embedded batteries, found in everyday items such as small electronics, toys and devices, can be damaged during collection and processing. This damage can cause fires in waste trucks and facilities, creating serious safety risks for workers, the community and local infrastructure.

Help keep the Burdekin safe by disposing of these items correctly:
🔹 Do not place battery-operated items in your general waste bin
🔹 Do not place them in your recycling bin
🔹 Take items with embedded batteries to Council’s waste facilities for safe disposal

Even when they appear flat, batteries can still hold charge and remain hazardous if disposed of incorrectly.

🍃 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝗰𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆 – 𝗔𝘆𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌳

Following the success of Council’s recent Free Mulch Day, this popular initiative is continuing with a monthly event for residents to enjoy.

Residents are invited to collect free mulch at the Ayr Transfer Station on 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟴 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 from 8am-12pm.

Council staff will be on-site with machinery to assist with loading. Bring along a trailer and take advantage of this opportunity to reuse green waste in your garden 🌱

Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on Council’s website and social media channels for upcoming dates and additional information.

🌿 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗦𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗗? – 𝗦𝗶𝗮𝗺 (𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗮)

Siam is a Category 3 restricted plant and poses a serious threat to local biodiversity and agriculture if left unmanaged.

This fast-spreading w**d:
- Forms dense, invasive thickets
- Produces thousands of fine seeds that easily attach to clothing
- Is spread by wind, machinery and animals

Burdekin Shire Council is actively working to prevent Siam spreading south of the Haughton River.

𝗧𝗲𝗹𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗨𝗽𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 – 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮

Telstra will be upgrading the mobile base station servicing Barratta to improve the 4G and 5G user experience.

Upgrade works are scheduled to commence on 19 June 2026 and will take approximately 9 days to complete.

Please note:
• Mobile services may be temporarily disrupted during this period
• The site will be switched off at times (up to 10 hours) to safely complete works
• Telstra customers will receive an SMS notification ahead of the upgrade

Importantly:
• NBN, satellite internet and landline services will not be impacted
• Other mobile providers will not be affected
• Calls to Triple Zero will automatically connect via another network if available

Burdekin Shire Council is inviting residents to attend a relaxed community drop-in session with Councillors.

The session provides an informal opportunity to meet with elected representatives, ask questions, and discuss matters that are important to the community.

The drop-in session follows the adoption of Council’s annual budget and provides an opportunity for Councillors to hear directly from residents.

📣 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 – 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹

🚫 The Home Hill Swimming Pool will be closed from 10am Tuesday 16 June 2026.

The temporary closure is required to allow investigations into potential leaks within the pool. This assessment will help Council identify and carry out any necessary repairs.

The pool will reopen on Wednesday 17 June as per usual.
