Burdekin Shire Council is proud to celebrate the success of the Young Digital Mentors Program, bringing together young people and senior community members to strengthen digital skills and social connection across the Burdekin.

Delivered by Burdekin Library, the program sees young mentors support senior participants to build confidence using everyday technology such as smartphones and tablets.

The Burdekin was the first location in Queensland to pilot this forward-thinking initiative, originally developed by the State Library of Queensland. The program continues to be supported by the State Library of Queensland and the eSafety Commission, with mentor training delivered in partnership with Creative Bytes.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the program showcases the strength of community connections in the region.

โ€œPrograms like Young Digital Mentors not only build valuable digital skills, they also bring generations together in a meaningful way,โ€ Mayor Dalle Cort said.

โ€œItโ€™s fantastic to see our young people stepping up to support others, while also developing confidence, leadership and communication skills of their own.โ€

Participants have praised the program for boosting confidence and providing a supportive learning environment, with many now more confident navigating their devices and staying connected.

Council thanks all mentors and participants for their involvement in creating a more connected and digitally inclusive Burdekin community.

Weโ€™ve had such a wonderful week at our First 5 Forever programs. From celebrating National Simultaneous Storytime with Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller to diving into a fun, Australianโ€‘animalโ€‘themed Messy Play session, there was so much joy and creativity in the library.

Thank you to all the families who joined us this week (and every week), we always enjoy talking, reading, singing, & playing together!
