What a wonderful opportunity for the youth!

MY FIRST SPEECH competition is an annual initiative that gives senior high school students the opportunity to engage with and learn about the Australian Parliament. Open to young people in Years 10, 11 and 12 across Australia, I would like to invite students from all Dawson schools to get involved and imagine they have just been elected to the House of Representatives, and deliver a three-minute first speech on an issue they are passionate about.
One outstanding student from each year level will be selected as a winner and awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to Canberra, accompanied by a parent or guardian, to present their speech at Parliament House.
Students can access resources, competition details and submit their entries via the website www.aph.gov.au/mfs.
Entries close at 11:59pm AEST on Monday, 20 July 2026, so get cracking 📝

I didn’t spend a lot of time there, but it was lovely to help where I could alongside the wonderful Janine - always such a pleasure to work with.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who give their time behind the scenes to make events like this possible for our community and young performers. It never goes unnoticed. ✨

An afternoon focused on wellbeing and connection, opening the door to conversations that don’t always come easily — but matter.

From well-known speakers to locals quietly doing incredible work across the Burdekin, there was a lot to take away.

Great to see Three Blokes Running there — young men doing some great things and leading by example. 👏

Credit to the organisers for another inspiring event, and a shout out to the Burdekin Shire Youth Council for helping out.
