As one of the world’s largest urban fire and rescue services, we manage fire emergencies in NSW’s major cities and towns.

As part of Fire and Rescue NSW's our purpose is to enhance community safety, quality of life and confidence by minimising the impact of hazards and emergency incidents on the people, environment and economy of New South Wales. We respond to rescues, hazardous materials incidents and possible terrorism activities across the State. We work with other government agencies to minimise the impact of bus

hfires, storms, floods, landslides, building collapses, motor vehicle accidents and other emergencies. We also run prevention and preparedness programs to prevent these emergencies and reduce their impact on the community.

Crews from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 391 Murwillumbah and in the north of the region attended a House Fire in the early hours of Monday Morning involving a large storage of lithium-ion batteries. The fire was extinguished and the scene made safe but two days later, the batteries reignited on their own.

This is called "Stranded Energy" which is trapped charge left inside a damaged battery that can restart a fire hours or even days later, with no warning.

This is why it is import too:

✅ Never bin damaged batteries- Always dispose of Lithium Ion Batteries Safely
✅ Move fire/heat/water-affected batteries outdoors if safe to do so
✅ Watch for swelling, heat, odour or smoke
✅ If in doubt, call 000

BUSH FIRE DANGER PERIOD

With the Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) commencing 1 September 2026, we want to remind our community about the importance of understanding the rules around outdoor burning and fire permits.

From 1 September 2026, fire permits within areas where the BFDP has been declared are issued for a 7-day duration only.

Fire and Rescue NSW issues fire ePermits all year round, however, the requirements can change when the Bush Fire Danger Period is declared.

Before conducting any outdoor burning, it is important to understand your local Council's Open Burning Policy and ensure all required environmental approvals have been met.

Understanding the conditions surrounding your permit, including when and where you can burn, is an important part of preventing escaped fires and keeping our community safe.

Our crew at 316 Goonellabah encourages everyone to know the rules, prepare appropriately and help us keep our community safe this bush fire season.

HOUSE FIRE
Just before 8:00pm last night, crews from Lismore, Goonellabah and Coraki responded to reports of a house fully involved in fire in the Lismore area.

On arrival, crews found a two-storey residential house fully involved in fire. Swift action by firefighters on scene prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. It took crews approximately two hours to bring the blaze under control.

This incident is a reminder to check your smoke alarms are working and to have a home escape plan.

FLEET FRIDAY | HAZMAT VESSEL HV316

Not every emergency happens on land, some Hazardous Materials incidents occur on our waterways, posing serious risks to people, marine life and the environment.

Our HAZMAT Vessel capability means our HAZMAT Vessel Masters can provide a specialised on-water response when our community needs it, alongside the many other emergencies Firefighters attend.

The Vessel carries specialised equipment used by HAZMAT Vessel Masters when dealing with incidents involving hazardous substances on our waterways, including fuel spills, chemical discharges and contaminated runoff.

All HAZMAT Vessel Masters have undergone specialised training, gaining skills and qualifications to safely deploy Hazardous Materials Booms in a Waterways Environment.

This vessel is kitted out with a 60Hp outboard engine that allows our crews to reach incidents that land-based appliances can't, bringing specialist equipment to identify, contain or make safe hazardous materials on the water.

Another important part of our fleet, helping us keep our waterways and community safe.

FITNESS DRILL

Firefighting isn't just about the gear, it's about the person wearing it.

Every year, our crew completes an Annual Fitness Drill. The Fitness Drill is a physical test designed to simulate the demands of real firefighting activities. From hauling hose lines to carrying equipment and working in full PPE, the drill ensures every firefighter remains fit, strong and ready to respond.

FLEET FRIDAY | HAZMAT VAN H316

Not every emergency involves fire, some involve hazardous materials that can pose serious risks to people, property and the environment.

Our station's HAZMAT capability means our HAZMAT Operators can provide a specialised response when our community needs it, alongside the many other emergencies Firefighters attend.

Our HAZMAT Van carries specialised equipment for attending incidents such as chemical spills, render safe operations, assist Police in specialist operations and gas leaks.

The vehicle also provides a higher level of decontamination capability, allowing our crews to assist with the decontamination of Firefighters and equipment following structure fires and other large-scale incidents.

With its specialised equipment and capability, the HAZMAT Van can also be deployed to incidents outside the Goonellabah area, providing HAZMAT support from the QLD border, down to Yamba, all the way out to Tenterfield and anywhere in-between.

Another important part of our fleet, helping us keep our community safe both locally and across a wider area.

HAZMAT VESSEL TRAINING

Earlier in the month, HAZMAT Vessel Masters undertook an Annual Emergency Exercise. The exercise tested our HAZMAT Vessel Masters and Operators ability to render safe a diesel fuel leak from a fuel tanker involved in a motor vehicle accident close to a waterway, where approximately 1500L of diesel had entered the local environment and waterway.

This exercise tested HAZMAT Operators ability to reduce the impact on the environment by creating artificial bunds on land and stopping the diesel leak, whilst HAZMAT Vessel Masters worked on the waterway to identify where booms should be placed and how best to manage the spill with the changing tides.

This exercise demonstrates the broad skillset of On-Call Firefighters. Have you ever considered being an On-Call Firefighter?

FLEET FRIDAY | PUMPER CP316

The newest appliance in the Fire and Rescue NSW Station 316 Goonellabah fleet is CP316. Our Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) Pump uses a mix of water, foam concentrate and compressed air to create a dense, clinging foam which allows crews to extinguish fires faster while using significantly less water than a conventional hose stream.

We also carry ladders, battery powered Rescue tools, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Emergency Life Saving equipment, additional hoses and 2000 litres of water.

CP316 can transport up to 6 crew to a wide range of incidents, from:
🏠 Structure Fires
🚗 Motor Vehicle Accidents
🐈 Animal rescues
🔔 Alarm Activations
☣️ Hazmat Calls

TRUCK ROLLOVER: Our HAZMAT Operators were recently called to a truck rollover near the NSW/QLD border- a response of 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach.

The truck was carrying approximately 800 litres of diesel. Crews worked to render the fuel tanks safe, preventing any environmental impact to the surrounding land and waterways.

The driver was fortunate to escape the rollover without injury.

This job is a reminder of just how far our Hazmat Operators will travel to protect communities and the environment.
