Structural/Village scenario training at Hartley RFB last night. A good opportunity to keep our Breathing Apparatus Operators and Structural Firefighters current, and also to make sure that all of our firefighters know the different roles and the command structures we employ for village incidents.

A mighty effort from firefighters from both Chifley and Blue Mountains Zones over the last 5 days has seen a significant HR completed. The 76 ha Kenny Street HR was conducted over the weekend, with crews then patrolling for several days to make sure fire remained inside the containment lines. Extremely rugged terrain and many dangerous trees meant that crews had to be alert at all times.

Members of Hartley RFB have been active on the ground over the weekend assisting with the Kenny Street HR. Great experience for some of our newer members and always good to be working with our neighboring brigades.

Firefighters from Hartley are joining brigades from across the district and Blue Mountains at the Kenny Street HR over the weekend. This has been years in the planning - do not be worried about smoke in the vicinity of Kanimbla Valley and Hartley. Crews will be on the fireground over the weekend and throughout the week.

Tomorrow, Friday 10 April, is a day of HIGH Fire Danger for the Central Tablelands.

There’s a heightened risk. Be alert for fires in our area. Decide what you will do if a fire starts. If a fire starts, your life and property may be at risk. The safest option is to avoid bushfire risk areas.

There is no total fire ban, but any burns should be carefully considered and must be notified to RFS via the website.

The statutory bushfire danger period ended at midnight on March 31.

Property owners in the local area who undertake vegetation pile burns after 31 March each year, do not require a fire safety permit - however you still have an obligation to notify the RFS and your neighbours at least 24 hours before you commence burning.

A simple notification can save us all a lot of time when a passer-by sees smoke from your fire and calls 000.

Visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au and click on the NOTIFY portal. Significant fines can apply for not complying with these conditions.

Don’t forget to check the weather forecast for your local area before lighting up. Bush and grass fires still occur in Autumn and Winter if conditions are conducive to the ignition and spread of fire.

And if someone does call in your fire, please be respectful to our volunteer firefighters who give up their time to keep the community safe by coming out to check.

This page displays all bush and grass fires attended by fire services in NSW and other incidents attended by NSW RFS volunteers.

The closure of Victoria Pass has resulted in a pleasing decline in call outs for our brigade … we get a lot of calls to MVAs (Motor Vehicle Accidents) on the Great Western Highway. However, we have had a couple of calls in the last week on local back roads. On both occasions, drivers escaped significant injury. We all ask drivers to take care of our local roads and have patience if we need to close the road to ensure the safety of our firefighters and other emergency services.

This month Hartley members attended 3 MVAs, 1 tree down, 1 RAFT deployment, 1 alarm operating and 1 spillage (oil on Great Western Highway. Last night our crew joined members of Marangaroo and South Bowenfels for a display of our capabilities at Lithgow Show. Using gas props from Chifley FCC, we demonstrated BA response, monitor attack and relay pumping. Audience members, particularly the kids, also got to enjoy practicing their fire extinguisher skills using our digital fire extinguishers!
