Join our 2026 Schouten Island Working Bee - Expressions of Interest are now open!

The Friends of Freycinet’s annual Schouten Island Working Bee is coming up soon and Wildcare members are invited to be part of it. This is an opportunity to experience one of Tasmania’s most beautiful island environments ,while contributing to important conservation work, and connecting with fellow volunteers.

This year’s working bee runs from 30 November to 15 December 2026, with options to join for one week or the full two weeks.

This is always a popular working bee, so make sure your Expression of Interest is submitted by 27 September.

Today, 7 September, is National Threatened Species Day.

The day marks the anniversary of the death of the last known thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, at Hobart Zoo in 1936. It is a reminder of what we have lost, and a call to protect the native animals, plants and ecological communities that remain under threat.

Threatened species are not just animals and birds. They include our native plants too, and protecting them means caring for the habitats and ecosystems they depend on.

Today, we also want to recognise the people who make conservation happen. Across Tasmania, Wildcare volunteers are contributing to this important work in many different ways. From the teams at Threatened Plants Tasmania and Friends of the Orange-bellied Parrot, to Friends of Lumeah Point who work with IMAS to improve habitat for the endangered live-bearing sea star, our members are helping protect some of Tasmania’s most vulnerable species.

And the contribution extends well beyond species-specific projects. Restoration, w**d removal, revegetation, track and fencing maintenance, and other hands-on field work all play a part in protecting native flora and wildlife.

Join our Orange-bellied Parrot surveys in October.

Friends of the OBP have two survey weekends coming up at Woolworth in Tasmania’s far North West – and registrations close 1 October, so now is the time to start planning.

🔸 10–11 October
🔸 17–18 October

It’s an opportunity to be part of important community science, helping survey for critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrots as they make their return journey to their summer breeding grounds at Melaleuca.

No special skills or equipment are needed – just come along, get involved and help support the conservation of this remarkable little bird.
