HIGH FIRE DANGER - FIRE PERMITS SUSPENDED – Saturday 5th September 2026

The Shoalhaven is forecast to experience HIGH fire danger conditions on Saturday 5th September 2026. As a result of the forecast all fire permits issued by the RFS have been suspended in the Shoalhaven for this time.

Windy and dry conditions will create a real fire risk across our landscape. It's incumbent upon all of us to be cautious with the use of fire.

If you see an out of control, unattended or large fire, call Triple-Zero (000) immediately.

FIRE PERMITS REQUIRED FROM TODAY IN THE SHOALHAVEN (September 1st) 🚨🔥

Today, Tuesday September first marks the start of the Bush Fire Danger Period.

This means that:

👉 Permits are now required to light pile burns, burn offs and any other non recreational fires

👉 If a Total Fire Ban (TOBAN) is in place, it is illegal to light and maintain any fires out in the open

👉 Fire Danger Ratings apply and permits may be suspended at any time

Don’t be the fire risk to your community, in the past and in the last few weeks, the NSW Rural Fire Service has responded to countless escaped pile burns and fires.

Ensure that when conducting these burns, you have water onsite, firefighting equipment if required, the correct protective clothing and the correct permit to undertake the burn!

When you finish burning, make sure it is completely out, specially if the fire danger rating will increase in the next few days.

Following these simple steps can help you prevent escaped burns 🥵

Last night, Huskisson Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade and NSW RFS - Vincentia Brigade got together to sharpen our bush firefighting skills!

Members went through some theory work before splitting into two groups.

Firefighters went through truck drafting, portable pumps and hand tools in two groups before moving into a comprehensive scenario involving a medium scale bush fire with a few twists and turns 🔥

All members who attended walked away feeling refreshed and ready, maintaining their competency for the upcoming bushfire season!

Bush Fire Danger Period commencing 1 September. 📅

The Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) will commence in the Shoalhaven on Tuesday 1 September. From this date, anyone planning to conduct a pile burn or other permitted burn will need to ensure they have the appropriate Fire Permit before lighting.

A permit is only one part of the process. If you're planning a burn, remember:

✅ CHECK - Make sure your proposed burn meets the requirements for a safe and lawful burn. Check your pile, surrounding vegetation, available equipment, and other requirements before applying.

📝 PERMIT - During the Bush Fire Danger Period, obtain the required Fire Permit online here https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp before lighting your burn

📢 NOTIFY - Once you've identified suitable conditions and intend to proceed, you must provide at least 24 hours' notice before lighting:

Notify the NSW RFS online at https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp
Notify all adjoining neighbours of your intention to burn.

🔥 BURN SAFELY - Continue to monitor weather and fire conditions right up until you light.

Having a permit does not mean you should proceed if conditions are no longer suitable. These requirements help ensure proposed burns can be appropriately assessed, planned burns are recorded before ignition, neighbours know that smoke or fire may be visible.

A little planning before you light goes a long way towards keeping our Shoalhaven communities safe.

At approximately 13:30 today, Huskisson 1 (heavy tanker) and Huskisson 9 (ultralight tanker) were responded to a bush/scrub fire at Jervis Bay airport, Jervis Bay Territory.

Crews worked together to contain the fire, implementing a strategic backburn which succeeded in its goal of containment.

Crews then worked to extinguish and black out the edge of fire before being released.

Whilst two of our trucks were at this fire, our third truck Huskisson Pumper (urban pumper) responded to a separate incident in Huskisson.

Last night, some of our Breathing Apparatus Operators and Structural Firefighters got together for their monthly training 🚨🔥

Two groups rotated through multiple scenarios, with a casualty removal, complex obstacle course (in a dark Smokey environment) and a firefighter down giving everyone a challenge!

At approximately 19:30 last night, Huskisson Pumper was activated to a structure fire in Huskisson.

On scene, crews were met with a single story structure well alight, with ourselves and crews from NSW Rural Fire Service St Georges Basin Brigade and NSW RFS - Vincentia Brigade successfully bringing the fire under control in under 30 minutes.

After overhauling the structure crews went through asbestos decontamination, concluding the operation at about 22:00.
