It was a pleasure to join the Eritrean community on the Gold Coast last weekend to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of St Teklehaimanot Eritrean Orthodox Church. It was wonderful to reconnect with community members and families, including many who have been part of MFO’s journey over the past 30 years.

Thank you to the congregation and board members for the warm welcome and hospitality, and congratulations on this special milestone. We wish St Teklehaimanot Eritrean Orthodox Church many more years of growth, connection and celebration!

It is with great sadness that MFO shares the passing of our beloved long-term sewing group teacher and volunteer Mary-Ellen Chee. We will always remember her for her kindness and dedication to supporting migrant women to feel a warm sense of belonging in a new country through the art of sewing. Mary-Ellen’s generosity of spirit and genuine compassion left a lasting mark on us all. We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to her family, friends, and everyone whose lives she touched. Mary-Ellen will be deeply missed, but her legacy will remain with us and she always be remembered as a valued member of the MFO family.

What happened at MFO in August? Renata is back with our monthly update, sharing some of the highlights from another busy month across MFO.

August was Multicultural Queensland Month, with our team taking part in events including the Multicultural Queensland Awards, the Gold Coast Health Multicultural Festival and the Masks of Hope Gala. We also continued supporting our community through the 2026 Census and welcomed new students into our Employment and Training programs.

And September is set to be a very special month, with our Father’s Day celebration, the Multicultural Women’s Health and Wellbeing Expo and, most importantly, MFO’s 30th Anniversary!
