formally known as the Tom Price Youth Support Association, TPYSA or Tom Price Youth Centre has been delivering a multitude of support services to youth and the broader community since 1986. Our core focus is to ensure that local people are not disadvantaged due to our remote location. Our services are provided to all people who require assistance. We play a strong advocacy role in representing lo
cal people, who may be experiencing problems. THE MEANING OF OUR NAME
We are based in the inland Pilbara region of WA and have a strong working relationship with the local aboriginal people. We consulted with local traditional owners of the lands on which we operate regarding a new name which represented parts of our client base, reflected or values, and showed respect to the custodians of the land. The elders offered a number of suggestions, but their strongest recommendation was for a word of strength in Banjima language which was 'Garduwarra Mia', which means 'Place of Help and Support'. This seemed to be a very good fit with our operations and we were very pleased to have their blessing to rename the Tom Price Youth Support Association to Garduwarra Mia. Many community members and their families have used this organisation for 38 years, so they are very aware of the support that we provide as a community not for profit group and the role we play in a geographically isolated community.
