The Australian Labor Party government will today move an amendment through federal parliament to give the eSafety Commissioner stronger powers to investigate whether social media platforms are complying with the minimum age rules.

A recent study followed more than 400 Australian teenagers before and after the restrictions took effect. Three months in, more than 85% of participants aged under 16 were still using social media platforms covered by the law. Most were accessing them through their own accounts.

The amendment will empower the commissioner to demand documents – not just information – from social media companies which show what they’ve done (or failed to do) to enforce age restrictions.

It will also empower eSafety to gather information or documents from other people and organisations where it reasonably believes they have evidence relevant to an investigation.

No one is surprised by this failure, and sadly we're not surprised that Anthony Albanese is reaching for more power in response.

Communications Minister Anika Wells has linked Labor’s push to overhaul internet laws to a dramatic fall in trust of her government, conceding people no longer believe her when she knocks on their door.

Yeah It's a nice try I guess...you know what would have been nicer? The NRL officials not being so fu***ng incompetent a week out from finals that Melbourne Storm were allowed 2 tries they shouldn't have had in the first half

Finland's Olkiluoto 3 reactor — the most expensive power station per megawatt ever built in Europe — has demonstrated something unexpected after its troubled construction: once a nuclear plant is running, it runs with a reliability and low-carbon output that no other electricity source can match, and Finland's electricity prices have reflected that fact every month since commissioning.

Olkiluoto 3 came online in April 2023 after 18 years of construction at a cost of approximately €11 billion — €3 billion over the original estimate. The numbers of the delay and cost overrun are well documented. What receives far less attention is what has happened since.

In its first 12 months of commercial operation, OL3 generated 9.6 terawatt-hours of electricity — 98% of its theoretical maximum output. A capacity factor approaching 98% is extraordinary by any global benchmark for any technology. It exceeded the performance of Finland's existing two reactors, which themselves routinely achieve 90%+ annual capacity factors. The reactor ran continuously for 340 days without a scheduled or unplanned shutdown in its first operational year.

The electricity market impact was immediate and large. Finnish wholesale electricity prices in 2023 averaged €57 per megawatt-hour — 40% below the 2022 levels driven by the European gas crisis. OL3's 1,600 MW of continuous carbon-free baseload displaced approximately 6 million tonnes of CO₂ that would otherwise have come from coal and gas imports.

OL3's construction was a cautionary tale. Its operation is a different story entirely.
