After yet another chaotic night of Territory Day fireworks, with hospitalisations, fires and wildlife disturbances, Alice Springs Town Council has passed a motion calling for safer firework use on Territory Day.
The motion, put by Councillor Aia Newport and seconded by Mayor Asta Hill, proposes identified areas for firework use that keeps our community safe, protects our wildlife and our pets, and looks after our beautiful natural environment.
This is about getting the balance right: celebrating this day while keeping what we love most about the Territory - our community and our environment - safe.

The council has called on LGANT to urge the NT Government to create designated places for private firework use on Territory Day.
1. That Council develop a resource encouraging safe and responsible firework use to share with the public in the lead up to Territory Day in 2027.
2. That Council develop a map, seeking input from the Northern Territory Fire and Emergency Services and other relevant stakeholders where appropriate, identifying areas where setting off fireworks should be avoided, with a focus on locations adjacent to the river corridor, Ilparpa Claypans, bushland, habitat areas and areas with high fuel loads.
3. That Council endorse the following notice of motion to be submitted for consideration at the next LGANT General Meeting:
That LGANT urge the Northern Territory Government to create designated places where private fireworks can be set off on future Territory Days, and other identified measures to reduce disturbance, damage and pollution into a more contained area.
