On 1 July, Ireland takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. It will be the eighth time Ireland has held the Presidency and helped to lead Europe at defining moments for our continent and our world.

In 2026, Europe faces new challenges and new opportunities. We are looking forward to working with partners to deliver results for Europe – prioritising Competitiveness, Values and Security.

In an uncertain world, our strength lies not in standing apart, but in standing together.

In Ireland, the seanfhocal or proverb “Ní neart go cur le chéile” reminds us that we have “Strength with unity”.

In March, Ambassador Bannon attended the Sofia Human Rights Forum, helping to set the tone for the proceedings with her opening speech.

With this year focusing on the theme of women's rights and strength, in this speech, the Ambassador shared personal insights and experiences, challenging us all to explore how we internalise prejudices about certain groups of people. She stressed that: Feminism is not about hating men, it's about hating a system that makes you believe that some people have more intrinsic value than others. And that's not just a woman issue, that's a human issue.

Ireland's own journey from a deeply conservative country to one that has championed women's rights and LGBT equality, in the space of one generation, was also highlighted. Ireland's experience shows that a country can change when it's people choose equality over silence.
