Report on SSU Participation in the Fourth Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) Volunteer Program
Gelephu, December 2025
The Sherubtse Social Service Unit (SSU), with the support of the College Management of Sherubtse College and the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB), participated in the Fourth Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) Volunteer Program from 23 to 26 December 2025. A total of 219 volunteers from Sherubtse College, comprising 130 students and 89 staff members, joined over 10,000 volunteers nationwide in this major national service initiative.
Day One: Opening Ceremony and Deployment
On 23 December 2025, all volunteers assembled at the Gelephu Archery Ground at 8:30 a.m. for the opening ceremony and briefing by the Governor, Dr. Lotay Tshering, who highlighted the objectives and national significance of the GMC initiative. Following the ceremony, volunteers were deployed to their respective work sites under the guidance of team leaders, Desuups, and Pelsups. Lunch and refreshments, including water, juice, and ice cream, were provided daily, and work concluded at 4:00 p.m.
Day Two and Day Three: Field Work and Team Engagement
On the second and third days, volunteers reported directly to their assigned teams and carried out fieldwork. Most Sherubtse volunteers were assigned to Team 3, where we actively engaged in clearing bushes and cleaning areas near the Thromde Sewage site, contributing to environmental maintenance and site preparation within the GMC area.
Day Four: Completion of Work and Royal Tokha
On the final day, remaining work was completed before 10:30 a.m., after which all volunteers gathered at Mao Chu (river) for the concluding royal event. His Majesty the King, in the presence of Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen and Their Royal Highnesses, granted tokha to the volunteers in recognition of our dedicated service, marking a meaningful conclusion to the program.
The participation of SSU in the Fourth GMC Volunteer Program reflects Sherubtse College’s strong commitment to national service, environmental stewardship, and community engagement, while fostering unity, discipline, and teamwork among students and staff.
