🌱 Independence Public Library Summer Camp 2026 – Week 1 Highlights 🌱
What an exciting and educational start to this year's Summer Camp! Our 2026 theme, "Plant Di Seed Mek Wi Read," encourages children to develop a love for reading while fostering an appreciation for nature and environmental stewardship.
Day 1: We were honored to welcome our special guest, Mr. Jamal Galves from the Clear Water Marine Aquarium Research Institute. Mr. Galves delivered an engaging presentation on the importance of protecting Belize's manatees and highlighted the role we all play in protecting our environment through the proper disposal of garbage.
Day 2: Campers learned the fundamentals of gardening, including soil preparation, the different types of soil, and common garden insects and pests. They then worked together to clean and prepare our garden beds for planting.
Day 3: Although the rainy weather prevented us from planting, the children enjoyed a creative nature-inspired arts and crafts activity, using leaves and other natural materials to create beautiful artwork.
Day 4: The children participated in an exciting insect scavenger hunt, where they worked in teams to locate and identify a list of insects found around the library grounds. They also planted cilantro, sweet peppers, and basil, putting into practice the gardening skills they had learned earlier in the week.
Day 5: We concluded the week with a fun art session, where campers expressed their creativity by painting plants and trees inspired by everything they had learned throughout the week.
Week 1 was filled with discovery, teamwork, creativity, and hands-on learning. We extend our sincere thanks to Mr. Jamal Galves, our volunteers, parents, and all of our enthusiastic campers for making the first week such a tremendous success. We can't wait to see what Week 2 has in store as we continue to "Plant Di Seed Mek Wi Read!" πŸŒΏπŸ“š

On Saturday, April 25th at 6:00 pm, we proudly hosted our Movie Night for autistic children and their families. It was a beautiful evening filled with joy, laughter, and togetherness. Food and drinks were generously donated by the Customs and Excise Department – Big Creek Branch, while toys were kindly provided by the Independence Village Council.
The children had the opportunity to enjoy a fun and relaxing outingβ€”watching a movie, playing, and even swinging under our beautiful pergola, graciously donated by Blue Nutrients. Most importantly, the evening was all about celebrating these amazing children and giving them a space to feel happy, included, and appreciated.
