🌲 NEW WOOD WASTE DISPOSAL OPTION 🌲

Have wood waste to get rid of? There’s now a designated place for it!

The Chief Mountain Regional Solid Waste Services Commission has approved a new Landfill Wood Waste Policy, providing an area at the Landfill Site where wood waste can be collected, chipped, and put to good use again. ♻️

🪵 Cost: $45/tonne
🚛 Loads must contain wood only
⚖️ All loads will be weighed when entering and exiting
📍 Wood must be placed in the designated area

The collected wood will be chipped and reused at the Landfill Site, with wood chips also being made available to participating municipalities.

FOUND DOG – HELP US FIND HER OWNER

A female dog showed up at a resident’s home on Sunday evening, and they are trying to locate her owner.

She is a tri-colour dog, mostly black and white with tan markings around her face. She was wearing a camo collar, but had no identification or owner information.

She does have a faded tattoo and has been taken to the Cardston Veterinary Clinic to see if they can find any information that may help identify where she belongs.

She is friendly, well behaved, travels well in a vehicle, and appears to have been well cared for.

If you recognize this dog or have any information that could help us locate her owner, please give Cardston County a call or send us a message through Facebook.

🚧 Upcoming Road Closure – Range Road 251 🚧

Please be advised that Range Road 251, approximately 2 km north of Highway 5, will be closed beginning around August 17, 2026, for construction. The closure is expected to remain in place for approximately five weeks, with work anticipated to be completed around September 19, 2026.

Detour Information:
Residents requiring access to the north side of the work area are asked to use the following route:
➡️ North on Range Road 250 from Highway 5
➡️ West on the new access road along Township Road 40
➡️ South to Range Road 251

Please refer to the attached detour map and landowner notification for additional information.

🚔 Cardston Records Lowest Crime Severity Index in Over a Decade

The latest Statistics Canada Crime Severity Index (CSI) shows encouraging results across Alberta RCMP jurisdictions, with a 10.4% decrease in 2025 compared to 2024. This reflects an overall decline in both the volume and severity of police-reported crime across the province.

📊 Cardston RCMP Highlights

✅ 2024 CSI: 113.6
✅ 2025 CSI: 95.1
⬇️ 16.3% decrease — the lowest Crime Severity Index recorded in our community in over a decade.

The Crime Severity Index (CSI) is a measure developed by Statistics Canada that considers both the number and seriousness of police-reported Criminal Code offences in relation to a community's population.

While the CSI provides valuable insight into crime trends, it should always be viewed within the context of the community. Smaller jurisdictions, such as the Cardston area, can experience larger year-to-year fluctuations because relatively small changes in reported crime can have a greater impact on the overall score. Larger communities generally see less variation due to their population size, although many of Alberta's larger RCMP jurisdictions also reported improvements this year.

For the Cardston RCMP, the CSI is one of several tools used to understand local crime trends, support intelligence-led policing, and guide operational priorities focused on reducing crime and addressing repeat victimization.

The Magrath Bulk Water Fill Station is temporarily out of service until further notice due to a connection issue with the service provider.

🔥 Temporary Burn Pile Closure – Glenwood/Hill Spring Transfer Site 🔥

Please be advised that effective today, the burn pile at the Glenwood/Hill Spring Transfer Site is closed to dumping for approximately 1½–2 weeks.

This temporary closure is necessary to allow the ash pile to cool completely and help prevent another unexpected flare-up later this summer.

We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation while this work is being completed. We will provide an update once the burn pile has reopened.

🚛 Mountain View Transfer Station – Summer Hours ♻️

The Mountain View Transfer Station will be open:

📅 Wednesdays: 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM
📅 Saturdays: 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM

We’re also excited to announce the addition of a new recycling bin! Residents can now recycle a wider range of recyclable materials at the transfer station, making it even easier to keep reusable items out of the landfill.

Alberta Environment has advised that the St. Mary River is currently running at a high level and is quite full. While the river is not flooding and has not overtaken its banks, residents and visitors are encouraged to exercise caution when near the water.

Fast-moving currents, unstable banks, and cold water conditions can create hazardous situations, especially for children, pets, and recreational users. Please stay alert and use extra care around the river and surrounding areas.
