EVR and Fernie Search and Rescue (FSAR) today announced a $100,000 donation by EVR to support the replacement of FSAR's Class-D Fixed Line (CDFL) helicopter rescue system, a critical tool that enables rapid response in some of British Columbia's most challenging terrain.
The funding will help FSAR replace its current CDFL system, which has been in service since 2017 and supported more than 100 rescue missions across the East Kootenay region. The specialized helicopter longline rescue equipment allows highly trained rescuers to be inserted directly into remote and complex environments, including avalanche terrain, steep slopes, densely forested areas and moving water.
FSAR is one of a limited number of search and rescue groups in British Columbia equipped to provide this specialized rescue capability. In addition to serving Fernie and the surrounding area, the program supports neighbouring search and rescue groups in Elkford, Sparwood, Cranbrook and Kimberley.
"The volunteers of Fernie Search and Rescue provide an essential service that helps keep people safe across the Elk Valley and beyond," said Mike Carrucan, CEO, EVR. "Many of our employees serve as volunteer rescuers and contribute their expertise through the organization's mountain rescue and helicopter longline programs. We're proud to support the replacement of this vital rescue system, helping ensure these highly skilled volunteers have the tools they need to respond quickly and safely when lives are on the line."
The CDFL team is made up of some of FSAR's most experienced members, with advanced training in avalanche safety, wilderness first aid, rope rescue, swiftwater rescue and winter travel. The system allows rescuers to be transported beneath a helicopter on a fixed line, eliminating the need for a suitable landing zone and significantly reducing rescue times in difficult terrain.
FSAR responds to approximately 50 incidents each year on behalf of agencies including the RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services and local fire departments, making it the busiest search and rescue group in the East Kootenays. Without the CDFL capability, many rescues would require lengthy ground extractions, increasing both risk to rescuers and the likelihood of poorer outcomes for those who are injured or stranded.

FSAR's members are all volunteers who dedicate countless hours to training and emergency response throughout the year. The organization includes ski patrollers, paramedics, mountain guides, fire rescue personnel and mine rescue team members, including volunteers from EVR operations.
The donation reflects EVR's ongoing commitment to supporting emergency response, community safety and the organizations that help make the Elk Valley a safer place to live, work and play.
