We are volunteer first responders to ambulance and fire calls within Liidlii Kue (the Village of Fort Simpson), NWT, Canada. We welcome new members who are keen to learn, be a part of a committed team, and help their community! On behalf of the Village of Fort Simpson, the Evacuation Alert in effect for Fort Simpson has been lifted as of 3pm on Friday, July 24, 2026.
Residents and visitors should continue to exercise caution when travelling or recreating near the fire area, as wildfire-related hazards may still exist, including fire-weakened trees, ash pits, and active suppression operations.

We are pleased to share that the Evacuation Alert for Fort Simpson has now been lifted.

As our community continues to recover, we ask everyone to remain vigilant. If you notice any signs of smoke, fire, or have concerns related to wildfire activity, please report them to the NWT Fire Information Hotline at 1-877-698-3473.

We are Home Together

The past three weeks have tested our community in ways we never expected.

As we return, let us continue showing the same patience, kindness and strength that carried us through evacuation.

Check on your neighbours, elders, friends and family. Thank the workers and volunteers. Give crews room to finish their work. Take care of yourself and your family.

Our community may look and feel different, but Liidlii Kue is still home and we will move forward together.

Services Take Time to Return to Normal

Recovery doesn’t happen overnight.

Now that we’re all home, it is important to remember that regular services like businesses, community programs, and public services may take time to fully resume.

Some organizations may reopen gradually, operate with reduced hours or have limited staffing and supplies. Before heading out, consider checking current hours and service availability.

Please be patient and kind with the people working hard to safely reopen and support our community. Many of them are also returning home, checking their properties and helping their own families settle back in.

We’ve been through a challenging few weeks together, and while there is still work to do we are one step closer to normal.

Roads and Trails may be Different

You may notice significant changes along roads and trails around Fort Simpson. This was not our regularly scheduled brush clearing!

Areas such as Wildrose and Nogah Heights experienced substantial wildfire activity. You will see burned vegetation, damaged trees, and the landscape that looks dramatically different from the one you remember.

We know this change in scenery may look inviting to some, but we advise caution, no fire doesn’t mean no danger! Danger trees, ash pits, unstable ground, and potholes still pose a threat to your safety. Please avoid tentering burned areas, for your own wellbeing.

If you notice smoke, smouldering vegetation, flames or a dangerous tree near a road, trail or property, report it immediately. Call 9-1-1 if there is an immediate threat to life or property.

How to Report Smoke, Hotspots or Sus Fire Activity

Have you seen any “sus” fire activity lately?

If you notice black smoke, smouldering trees/plants, flames, or anything that appears unusual, please report it immediately. Small hotspots can reignite under the right conditions!

For local Fire, Ambulance or Rescue assistance, call: 867-695-2222

If there is an immediate threat to life or property, call 9-1-1 immediately.

When reporting fire activities, share as much information as you safely can, including:
- The location or nearest landmark
- What you can see, such as smoke, flames, or smouldering vegetation
- Whether nearby people, homes, or other property may be at risk

Do not enter a burned area or approach the hotspot yourself. Keep a safe distance and allow emergency crews to assess the situation.

When in doubt, make the call. Early reporting can help prevent a small hotspot from becoming a larger problem.

Fridge and Freezer Safety

When in doubt, throw it out!

When you get home, you may feel cravings for a nice home cooked meal. Before getting out the pots and pans please remember to check the quality and condition of your food in the fridge and freezer.

If your home has experienced periodic or prolonged power outages, some food may no longer be safe to eat.

As a general guideline:
- Refrigerated food that has been without power for an extended period should be discarded.
- Frozen food that still has ice on it, or remains frozen will generally be safe.
- Any food that has completely thawed and becomes warm should be thrown away!
- Never taste food to determine whether it is safe.

Wear gloves when handling spoiled food, place it in secure garbage bags and follow any local instructions for garbage collection or disposal. For more information on proper garbage disposal, please visit the Village website for any updates (https://www.fortsimpson.com).

We know groceries are expensive, but you can never put a price on your health and safety!
