Congratulations to Grade 11 student Harry Nickerson of Halifax on being named MVP at the Senior Goalball Nationals in Richmond, BC, May 15–17! Harry helped lead Team NS Men to gold alongside teammates Mason Smith, Nick Gentleman and Peter Parsons.

The team has also been named to Team Canada for the Goalball World Championships in Hangzhou, China from June 6–16. With four Nova Scotians on the roster, two-thirds of Team Canada’s six-player team has roots right here in NS.

Their journey began years ago through connections made at APSEA, with Peter coaching them from the start. Congratulations to the entire team and best of luck at Worlds!

Big transitions can bring lots of questions and APSEA is here to help. Parents and caregivers of learners who are Deaf or hard of hearing are invited to join Moving Up! on June 10, a virtual session focused on supporting learners as they prepare for junior high or high school.

Earlier this month, a group of young learners who are blind or low vision and their families gathered at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts in Halifax for an Early Learning Music and Movement session.

Through sound, rhythm, movement and tactile exploration, they experienced music in engaging and meaningful ways while building connections and having fun together. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this wonderful morning of learning, exploration and community!

It’s Education Week in Nova Scotia and we’d like to congratulate APSEA team members Janice Gavin, Anne Jennings, Paul Wilkins and Melanie Wilson, this year’s provincial award recipients. APSEA learners and families are invited to a Kick Off to Summer event on Saturday, June 6 in Dieppe, NB.

Enjoy activities for all ages, including field games, STEM fun with Snapology and a visit from Travel to You Zoo. Connect with other families and APSEA team members while celebrating the start of summer. Lunch is provided at no cost.

In April, APSEA EST-DHHs hosted a gathering at the Sackville Heights Community Centre. 11 learners and their families came together for a day of connection, playing games and making amplification jewelry. Learners were able to explore the beauty of their amplification and make connections with other learners from different areas of the province.

Our next In-Focus Session for Parents & Caregivers: Vision Loss Lived Experience Panel takes place on Tuesday, May 12 (7:00–8:00 pm (AST) / 7:30–8:30 pm (NST)). Hear from panelists (including former APSEA learners) who experienced vision loss as young people. Panelists will share their journeys, including adapting to vision loss, navigating barriers, and finding success at school and beyond.

A favourite event is back — and your teddy bear is invited! The APSEA Teddy Bear Clinic happening in Antigonish on May 9! Bring along your child’s favourite stuffie and step into a playful, interactive “clinic” where teddy bears become the patients. With real-life doctors and nurses guiding the way, learners can take their teddy through triage, check-ups, x-rays, casting and more.

Earlier this month, we hosted a Valley (NS) gathering where six learners and their families came together for a day of connection, exploration, and hands-on learning. The group visited the Blue Beach Fossil Museum, discovered fossils, and learned about the region’s unique geology before heading to the shoreline for a picnic and more fossil searching. It was a great day of outdoor learning, connection and shared memories.
