This week is National AccessAbility Week and Access Awareness Week Nova Scotia.

Ableism is a word many families are just starting to hear, even though you may have felt it for years in schools, services, and everyday life. For our first post this week, we’re highlighting one event that helps put words to those experiences and offers practical tools for change.

On Wednesday, June 3, 1:30–2:30 p.m. (Atlantic), the Nova Scotia Accessibility Directorate is hosting a free online “Understanding Ableism” webinar on Zoom. In this short session, you’ll hear what ableism means, how it shows up in everyday life, and simple ideas for making schools, services, workplaces, and communities more fair and welcoming.

Graduation is a milestone for every student!

Inclusive Education Canada / Éducation inclusive Canada has put together a helpful video on making school graduation ceremonies welcoming and accessible. It covers practical steps schools can take so every student can participate and be celebrated with their peers.

If you are a family member, educator or school leader, this is a great resource to watch and pass along as you plan this year’s ceremonies.

Many people in Canada, including disabled people and older adults, still cannot find housing that is accessible and truly meets their needs.

The National Housing Council has launched a human‑rights review panel on the lack of accessible housing in Canada. Review panels are a new process under the National Housing Strategy Act that let people share evidence and lived experience on systemic housing issues so the Council can make recommendations to the federal Minister responsible for housing.

Written submissions are open until June 5, 2026. People with lived experience, families, housing and service providers, advocates, and other partners are invited to take part.

Share your experience and ideas here:
