🔥 A HUGE THANK YOU! 🔥

We are incredibly grateful to the Invermere Health Care Auxiliary & Thrift Store for their generous donation of $8,299.99 toward our new Thermal Imaging Camera! 🚒❤️

A thermal imaging camera is an important tool that allows firefighters to detect heat through smoke and darkness. It can help us locate people, identify hidden fire and hot spots, and make quicker, safer decisions during an emergency.

Equipment like this plays a huge role in helping us protect our community and keep our firefighters safe while doing so.

We also want to recognize the incredible volunteers who make this all possible. The funds raised through the Thrift Store are thanks to the time and hard work generously given by volunteers in our community.

⚡ Safe charging is a superpower! ⚡

Lithium-ion batteries are in almost everything we use: phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, and power tools. When they fail, they can cause fires that spread fast. A few everyday habits go a long way:

🔌 Use the right charger. Stick with the one that came with your device or a manufacturer-approved replacement. Cheap, off-brand chargers may not meet safety standards.

🛋️ Charge on a hard surface. Beds, couches, and pillows trap heat. A table, desk, or bare floor is a much safer spot.

🔋 Unplug when it's full. Leaving devices plugged in adds heat and stress to the battery.

🔥 Feels hot? Stop using it. If a battery is very hot, swelling, leaking, smoking, smelling strange, or making popping or hissing sounds, stop using it right away.

🛴 Charge e-bikes, scooters, and tools outside when you can, and never block an exit while charging. These bigger batteries store more energy.

✈️ Travelling? Keep charging devices where you can see them, don't charge vapes on the plane, and tell a flight attendant if something seems wrong.

✅ Look for the safety mark before you buy. In Canada, check for certification from a recognized testing lab such as CSA, cUL/ULC, or cETL.

And don't forget: working smoke alarms and a home escape plan save lives.

🔥 COLUMBIA VALLEY PRESCRIBED BURNS UNDERWAY TODAY – SEPTEMBER 23

A suitable burn window has opened and prescribed fire operations are underway today in the Wilmer and Windermere areas as part of the Kootenay ʔa·kinq̓uku TREX prescribed fire training exchange.

Residents in Invermere and throughout the Columbia Valley can expect to see and smell smoke in the area over the next few days. Smoke conditions may vary throughout the day depending on local terrain and weather conditions.

If you’re travelling in the area, please be aware that Westside Road may experience intermittent closures and traffic control, and the Wilmer Wetlands Trail will be inaccessible during main ignition operations.

These are planned and carefully managed prescribed burns being carried out under suitable conditions with experienced wildfire personnel on site.

We are on site today, September 23, for multiple prescribed burns in the Southeast Fire Centre’s Invermere Fire Zone.

A suitable burn window has opened today for prescribed burns in the Wilmer area, located approximately 1 kilometre north of Wilmer, and Windermere area on ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation land, located approximately 7.5 kilometers southeast of the community of Windermere. Test ignitions were successfully completed in recent days.

Smoke from these burns is expected to be variable due to local terrain, but may be visible over the next few days from surrounding communities and to motorists travelling along Highway 93/95. Venting is forecast to be better during the afternoon periods.

Motorists planning to travel along Westside Road can expect traffic control, and Westside Road may be intermittently closed to support crew safety while operations are underway. Stopping on Westside Road near the burn area will not be permitted. Additionally, the Wilmer Wetlands Trail will not be accessible while main ignition operations are underway.

These projects are being implemented by Kootenay ʔa·kinq̓uku TREX participants. Kootenay ʔa·kinq̓uku TREX is a prescribed fire training exchange co-hosted by Ktunaxa Nation and the BC Wildfire Service, with support from the First Nations' Emergency Services Society of BC and UBCO’s Canadian Prescribed Fire Training Program. Safety is always our top priority and participants in this training exchange will be working alongside experienced BC Wildfire Service staff and with guidance from local partners and project proponents.

Given the scope and scale of wildfires currently burning in B.C., and to further protect public safety, recreational off-road vehicle use will be prohibited on Crown land in the Kamloops and Southeast Fire Centres, as well as parts of the Cariboo and Coastal Fire Centres. This prohibition is effective immediately, as of 12 p.m. (noon) on August 10, 2026.

🚒 Invermere Fire Department Responds to Wildfires Near Summerland

This morning, two members of the Invermere Fire Department, along with one member of the Columbia Valley Rural Fire Department, headed out to assist with wildfire operations near Summerland.

We’re proud to see our members step up and support communities across British Columbia during what continues to be a challenging wildfire season.

Thank you to these three members for answering the call and dedicating their time and skills to help protect people, property and communities.

A special thank you as well to the members back home who continue to answer calls, respond to emergencies and help protect our own communities while their fellow firefighters are away. Your dedication and commitment don’t go unnoticed.
