The Marathon Fire Department would like to express our sincere condolences to the family, friends and OPP for the loss of Constable Turan Bali. Rest Easy. Our prayers are with you all.

It is with deep sorrow that I confirm that OPP Provincial Constable Tarun Bali was killed in the line of duty this afternoon in Hearst. His courage and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten. As we grieve this immeasurable loss, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, colleagues and the policing community.

UPDATE (May 15, 2:55 p.m. EST): The suspect sought by OPP in connection to this stolen vehicle investigation has been located and placed into police custody. Members of the public may resume regular activity. There is no threat to public safety. ^pia

UPDATE (May 15, 1:25 p.m. EST): Nipigon OPP continues to advise the public against picking up hitchhikers on Highway 11/17.

On May 14, 2026 at around 7:45 p.m. EST, Nipigon OPP initiated a traffic stop after an ALPR alert identified a stolen black Ford SUV towing a travel trailer. The driver fled on foot, prompting an extensive search involving the Emergency Response Team, K9 Unit, and aerial support, but was not located.

The individual remains outstanding. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Nipigon OPP or Crime Stoppers. ^pia

MISE À JOUR (15 mai, 13 h 25 HNE) : Nipigon OPP continue de déconseiller au public de prendre des auto-stoppeurs sur l'autoroute 11/17.

Le 14 mai 2026, vers 19 h 45 (heure de l'Est), la section de Nipigon de l'OPP a procédé à un contrôle routier après qu'une alerte du système de reconnaissance automatique des plaques d'immatriculation (ALPR) a permis d'identifier un SUV Ford noir volé tractant une caravane. Le conducteur s'est enfui à pied, ce qui a déclenché une vaste opération de recherche mobilisant l'équipe d'intervention d'urgence, l'unité canine et un soutien aérien, mais il n'a pas été retrouvé.

L'individu est toujours en fuite. Toute personne disposant d'informations est priée de contacter la Police provinciale de l'Ontario de Nipigon ou Crime Stoppers. ^pia

Over the weekend we held our annual award dinner. During this event members were acknowledged for their years of service as well as the Fire Fighter of the year award, sponsord by Brokerlink Marathon.

The Fire Fighter of the Year award was presented to two members, selected by their peers, in recognition of their professionalism, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to public safety in Marathon. The recipients of this years award were, Chantal Bernard - Fire Fighter & Dispatcher, and Tamara Needham - Dispatcher.

A huge thank you to the local businesses that support us throughout the year, as well as those that donated to this years award banquet. Community partnerships play a critical role in sustaining the fire service.
