Wildfire smoke can travel long distances and affect air quality, even when fires are far from our community. As smoke levels increase, so do potential health risks.
When wildfire smoke and extreme heat occur at the same time, health risks can increase for everyone. During these conditions, it's important to reduce your exposure to smoke while also taking steps to stay cool. If you must choose between avoiding smoke and avoiding heat, prioritize staying cool, as overheating can pose a greater immediate risk to your health.
• Check the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) and local weather alerts before spending time outdoors. Reduce or reschedule strenuous outdoor activities.
• Drink water regularly and take breaks in cool, shaded, or air-conditioned spaces.
• Watch for symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, extreme thirst, or confusion.
