🌱Last week, Kelsey and Rebekah from your United Way had the privilege of joining community partners for a tour of the Rama Community Farm (Rama Maawnjiydiwag Gtlgaan) and it was truly an unforgettable experience.

The visit was organized by the Simcoe County Food Council , Orillia and Area Food Strategy, and Lakehead University Orillia Campus bringing together community members and partners to learn about this incredible farm that has been growing food and community since 2017.

We toured the farm, greenhouse, and new farm building, and heard from farm manager Kailey LeDrew and team about agricultural practices, both historical and present day, including the lasting impacts of colonial history and the enduring strength of Indigenous food traditions. The farm's mission is rooted in increasing food security and food sovereignty for their community, and the work happening here reflects exactly that.

The farm supports the community in so many ways, supplying the Senior Centre, Early Childhood Education Centre, Food Bank, subscribed food boxes, as well as the Rama Country Market. and there are sales at the farm.

And yes, we got to taste some of the season's best straight from the garden! 🍓Strawberries, radishes, asparagus, snap peas, dill, and chives. There is truly nothing like fresh food from the soil.

📣 Save the Date | Poverty in Muskoka

📅 Date: September 22, 2026
🕙 Time: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
📍 Location: Port Carling Community Centre- 3 Bailey St, Port Carling, ON

This September, we’re bringing together residents, community organizations, municipal leaders, and neighbours from across Muskoka for a powerful day of dialogue and discovery.

Poverty in Muskoka is a community awareness event exploring the realities of poverty, how it affects individuals and families, locally. The goal? That every person who walks through the door leaves with new knowledge and real actions to take.

This event is for EVERYONE. Whether you’re a frontline worker, a decision maker, a volunteer, or simply someone who cares about Muskoka, your voice belongs in this conversation. 💬

More details on agenda and registration coming soon. In the meantime, mark your calendars and share this post with someone who should be in the room! 🙌

What an incredible evening! 🏠✨

CEPO, Brian Shelley had the honour of joining Samantha Jones and the incredible team at My Friend's House for their donor appreciation event, and what a night it was.

United Way Simcoe Muskoka has been proud to support the expansion of My Friend's House's services through a three-year community collaborative grant of nearly $400,000, helping grow their reach from emergency shelter for women and children into transitional housing.

But the real highlight of the evening? My Friend's House announced a major donation that will allow their vital transitional housing work to continue well beyond our current funding commitment. 🎉

This is what community looks like, organizations, donors, and supporters coming together to create lasting change for women and children in our region. We are so proud to be part of this journey alongside such a dedicated team.

💡Who is feeling financial anxiety most in Canada today?

Single parents, newcomers, and youth are among the groups most affected.

United Way Centraide Canada’s 2026 Financial Anxiety Index shows that a growing number of people are feeling financial pressure. The data also shows that 22% of people in Canada have experienced poverty. This is why supporting our communities is more important than ever.
