Mission Search & Rescue Society Mission Search & Rescue (MSAR) is a registered non-profit organization in the province of BC All members are 100 per cent volunteer and are on call 24/7.

Mission Search & Rescue (MSAR) is a registered non-profit organization in the province of British Columbia. Its primary function is that of a community resource to assist the RCMP, the BC Ambulance Service and the BC Coroners Service in a variety of search and rescue functions. We currently have over 20 members, and growing larger in numbers every year. We are a strong team of volunteer professionals. All funds for new equipment and training is acquired by fundraising projects, plus the support of local service groups, government funding programs, and by the generous support of members of the general public.

When someone is lost, missing or in distress, trained search and rescue volunteers help strengthen the response.

Across Canada, volunteers contribute specialized skills, local knowledge and additional capacity across air, ground and sea search and rescue.

Their service is invaluable, particularly across Canada’s vast size, terrain, coastline, and challenging weather conditions.

Earlier this week, Mission Search and Rescue was called out to assist boaters who had become stranded on an island in the Fraser River after their boat drifted away.

Thankfully, the subjects were located and successfully returned to shore.

Conditions can change quickly on the water, and here in Mission we are still impacted by the tidal effects from the ocean. Recent hydrometric data shows that water levels can vary as much as 2 meters within a week and varies 1+ meters multiple times within 24 hours. This is your friendly reminder to keep fluctuating water depth in mind when you choose a spot to shore up your boat. Always have a plan, carry the proper safety equipment, and make sure someone knows where you’re headed.

Every Thursday evening, MSAR members come together to practice our skills. Tonight’s practice focused on our Boat Operators out on the Fraser River doing an orientation and our Rope Techs at Base practicing their rope skills.

These are just two of many competencies our members must master.
