📚Staff Pick Saturday!📚
Gen recommends: Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts.
Shantaram sure is intimidating when you first pick it up, but don’t let the size put you off, it’s absolutely worth the commitment.
Loosely based on Gregory David Roberts’ own life, the story follows Lin, a convicted armed robber and he**in addict who escapes from a maximum-security prison in Australia and makes his way to Bombay (now Mumbai) using a false passport.
Once in Bombay, Lin builds a new life for himself. He runs a free medical clinic in one of the city’s poorest slums, while somehow also finding himself drawn deeper into the world of counterfeiters, smugglers, gunrunners, and the Bombay mafia.
It’s a wild story of crime, love, friendship, survival, betrayal, and finding your place in the world. It’s a long read, but honestly, worth every page. Definitely one to add to your list!
