Recruit FFs McAren, Gross, Ursua-Riding and Pollard were some of our members out representing our department and collecting donations this past long weekend in support of Circle Education.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we raised over $4,000!!!

A big thank you as well to our local Thrifty Foods for their generous donation towards our fundraising BBQ.

Circle Education is a BC-based non-profit organization that provides environmental education, youth programs and community initiatives focused on sustainability, leadership, and connection to the natural world. We’re proud to support the important work they do in our community💛

This past Sunday was the final ladders class for our recruits, led by Captain Hunsberger and FF Lindstrom, focusing on ladder raises, lowers, and firefighter/patient rescue scenarios.

It’s been great watching the recruits’ skills and confidence continue to grow each week. Great job, recruits!

The Salt Spring Island Fire Fighters Association Local 4467 will also be hosting a fundraising BBQ, with proceeds supporting Island Ignite — a mentorship-based fire service camp that empowers young women in Grades 11–12 through hands-on firefighting experience, leadership development, teamwork, and confidence-building opportunities. Come support a great cause while learning more about emergency preparedness in our community!

Due to ongoing dry conditions and elevated wildfire risk, open fire prohibitions will take effect Thursday May 7th at 12:00 PM throughout the Coastal Fire Centre, including Salt Spring Island and Vancouver Island.

The prohibition includes:
🚫 Campfires
🚫 Backyard burning
🚫 Open burning

These restrictions are being implemented to help reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires and protect our community during current high fire danger conditions.

Please do your part by following all fire restrictions. Together, we can help keep Salt Spring Island safe this wildfire season!

We are currently at a HIGH Fire Danger Rating, with a mandatory 2-hour fire watch in place.

Starting tomorrow May 5th, we move into the Early Shift:
• All high-risk activities must stop by 1:00 PM
• A 2-hour fire watch remains required

Conditions are dry and fire risk is elevated. Please be mindful of your activities and do your part to keep our island safe.

What do the fire danger ratings mean?

LOW: Fires can ignite and spread, but are typically small with limited impact on deeper fuels or larger materials.

MODERATE: Fuels are beginning to dry, increasing the likelihood of surface fires. Activities can continue, but should be done with care.

HIGH: Fuels are very dry and fire risk is significant. Fires can start easily, spread quickly, and become challenging to control. Extra caution is required, and some activities may be restricted.

EXTREME: Fuels are extremely dry and conditions are critical. Fires can ignite rapidly, grow aggressively, and are difficult to contain. Strict restrictions are likely in place, including bans on open burning and other high-risk activities.
