NEW ART EXHIBIT AT MACNAUGHT HISTORY CENTRE AND ARCHIVES

Culture Summerside is pleased to announce a new exhibit featuring the works of a local artist through its recurring ’Sixty Days of Fame’ exhibit series.

The Sixty Days of Fame series provides professional and amateur artists with gallery space to exhibit their work in a professional setting over a two-month period. The initiative also brings awareness about opportunities for community members to engage with the arts in Summerside.

For the months of September and October 2026, The Sixty Days of Fame exhibit will feature the artwork of Sharon Hutchinson.

This Summerside artist is self-taught, and her exhibit pieces mainly feature acrylic on canvas. Hutchinson calls herself a ‘Free Painter’, painting things from her mind that have inspired her over the years. “I can always come up with lots of ideas when I pick up my paintbrush.” shares the artist.

Hutchinson also shares that participating in her artistry helps to ease the chronic pain and stress she lives with daily.

The exhibit can be viewed Tuesday – Saturday from 10 am – 12:30 pm and 1:30 – 4 pm at the MacNaught History Centre and Archives, located at 75 Spring Street in Summerside.

A 'Meet the Artist' reception will take place next Wednesday, September 9th from 6 - 7:30 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Admission is pay-what-you-can. Accessible entrance is available.

Our students are starting to wrap up their time here at Culture Summerside, and we're sad to see them go after a wonderful summer.

Over the last few months our students have:
* Provided interpretation of our sites and museums;
* Engaged with visitors, artists & community partners;
* Helped to deliver Culture Summerside events and programs;
* Assisted in preserving archival material
* So much more!

Our students built new skills while showing enthusiasm in learning more about Summerside's rich history, culture and art scene.

They provided warm hospitality and an eagerness to help all who came through the doors of our sites and programs.

Those students that worked with us in previous summers seamlessly transitioned right back into action, greatly contributing to the smooth operation of our facilities and programs.

Thank you Students for a great summer - it sure won't be the same without you around here! Wishing each of you all the best for the academic year ahead.

Please visit www.CultureSummerside.com for information on fall hours at our sites and museums.

Today, we honour Dorothy Randall Wyatt, born on this date, August 23, 1893, weighing 8 lbs. 11 oz., according to her mother’s journal.

Dorothy was the older sister of Wanda Wyatt, and like her sister, lived her entire life at 85 Spring Street in Summerside, which is now known as the Wyatt House Museum, part of Wyatt Heritage Properties Inc..

Inside the museum, you will learn about Dorothy and see interesting artifacts and photos reflecting both her childhood and mature years. View a toy Singer sewing machine, believed to have been a Christmas gift for Dorothy - a very special gift for a child of her time. You’ll also find a sterling silver dresser set that Dorothy received from her parents in 1912, purchased from Birks store in Montreal and engraved with her initials, showcasing the family's preference for well made, quality items.

Dorothy had a strong interest in the arts and music. She studied voice in Toronto for a time and became known locally for her singing, performing on the radio, at weddings, and in church choirs. She also studied interior decorating, though much of her early adult life was spent caring for her mother and accompanying her to various sanatoriums for treatment.

Dorothy passed away in 1958 at the age of sixty-five. To learn more about the Wyatt Family, visit our website for information on the Wyatt House Museum and the history it contains. https://www.culturesummerside.com/

As declared by the United Nations, today is International Youth Day!

Here at Culture Summerside, we're celebrating with a group of wonderful young people enrolled in our 2026 Culture Camp. Today's theme was 'Youth Leadership Day'.

Our participants learned about the inner workings of municipal government, gained information about Summerside's various industries, explored our community's history, and performed activities that celebrate artistic expression, critical thinking and working as a team.

These young leaders have a bright future and are poised to make important contributions to our community!

We want to thank our facilitators Chole and Samantha for being fantastic examples to our youth this week. Thanks also to the community members who have shared their time with our campers.
