Over the past three months, our Thunder Bay facility has been raising something pretty special...monarch butterflies! 🌿🦋

What started as an idea inspired by one of our amazing staff members, who generously provided the milkweed, quickly turned into an experience that our youth and staff have loved being part of.

Together, they have watched the monarchs grow through each stage of their life cycle; from tiny caterpillars, to forming their chrysalises, to finally emerging as beautiful butterflies ready to take flight. Just recently, one of the youth celebrated an incredible milestone by releasing their 25th monarch! 🥹🦋

And we're not finished yet...three more monarchs are still waiting to hatch!

But this experience has been about so much more than butterflies. It has provided meaningful opportunities for youth to develop skills through hands on learning, curiousity, observation, patience, responsibility, problem-solving, communication, and caring for living things.

Sometimes learning doesn't happen sitting at a desk. Sometimes it looks like checking on a caterpillar, carefully caring for something that depends on you, watching a transformation unfold, asking questions, and finally opening your hands and watching a butterfly take flight. ❤️

We can't wait to see what the final three bring!

There was something truly special happening at one of our Thunder Bay facilities as staff and youth gathered together for a feast and a small celebration to mark the completion of our new fire pit area.

This beautiful space was created, built, and brought to life by our incredible Maintenance team member, who put so much time and care into making it a place where people can gather, connect, share stories, and create memories. ❤️

As part of the celebration, our Elder shared the significance and teachings of a fire ceremony, helping everyone understand the importance of coming together around the fire and the meaning it holds within Indigenous traditions.

It was a beautiful reminder that sometimes the most meaningful spaces are the ones that bring people together. A place to slow down, share a meal, listen, learn, and connect.

Here’s to many more meals, conversations, teachings, and memories around the fire!

Let's try something new: a fun, safe Halloween family outing - Saturday, October 31, 2026, 6-8 pm. Organizations, clubs, businesses and individuals can reserve a spot at Kenora Bed 'n' Bale to hand out treats, and kids can trick or treat in our little 'village'.
If you love Halloween, email us at [email protected] to reserve one of our bunkies, or set up your own tent or even your vehicle's trunk. Decorate your spot, dress up, play spooky tunes and give the kids some sweet memories.
No charge to reserve a cabin or spot (just tidy it up after the event). We'll keep a running list of who is coming, so families know where the treats are coming from.
No charge for families to come trick or treat - Sat Oct 31, 6-8pm. We'll have the campfires lit!

**Watch for some separate Halloween Matineighhhh times where families can come visit our animals for the usual $5 entry fee**
