During the attack on Sept 3rd 2006 the wounded and dead were brought to a hasty CCP (Casualty Collection Point).

It was set up beside the Dozer used by the Combat Engineers and was in a defendable and somewhat secure position behind the main contact at the school.

At this point WO Nolan’s body was still in the back of the abandoned LAV 31 Bravo. WO Melish came to the CCP to talk to our CSM and others to organize a retrieval party to head back and grab WO Nolan’s body. Pte Cushley was also at the CCP since his lav 31 Bravo was stuck in an anti tank ditch and recently abandoned.

A 81mm anti tank round hit the dozer and killed WO Mellish and Pte Cushley. It injured our Sgt Major, blowing out his ear drums and others that were at the CCP were also hit by shrapnel. The CCP was collapsed, wounded and dead thrown in the back of over filled LAVs and we withdrew again further out into the Arghandab for stand off.

Red smoke was used to mark our position since an air strike was called in on the enemy in depth.

The 1000Lb JDAM missed its target and skipped across the ground about 50 metres in front of our position, thankfully it was a dud.

Sept 3rd 2006: After exiting the U shaped ambush we had to cover the other callsigns that needed to get out.

At this point 3 LAVs have exited the ambush the same way we came in. 31 Bravo was now on there way out when they accidentally drove into an anti tank ditch.

Under intense fire from the Taliban and with us laying down cover fire 31 Bravo moved on foot back to the Hasty CCP (Casualty Collection Point) set up by next to the combat engineers dozer.

At first light Sept 3rd 2006 we moved across the dry River bed and towards OBJ Rugby (the white school). Our first obstacle was a berm followed by an anti tank trench. Combat engineers were called up to make a breach in the obstacles for us to move through, 7 platoon leading.

After moving through the breach made by the combat engineers and spreading out into a line of 4 LAVs with a G wagon in the middle of us, we started our advance towards the white school (objective Rugby).

We stopped in that same formation and there was a brief pause before all hell broke loose.

An RPG hit the front windshield of the G Wagon WO Rick Nolan was in, killing him instantly. Cpl Teal, our Medic Doc Furoy and the Terp were also inside the G wagon but made it out alive. They engaged the Taliban from their position beside the G Wagon while taken sustained effective fire from small arms and a Dshk machine gun.

At that same time an 82mm anti tank round hit the LAV beside us. It killed Sgt Shane Stachnik instantly and everyone in the vehicle was left unconscious and or disoriented.

Our remaining 3 LAVs caught in a U shaped ambush began to return fire in an attempt to get our wounded out and get off the “X”.

In this video you can hear the sound of air being released. That’s the back ramp of the LAV going down and at this point one of our guys went out to take a tow cable off the front of our LAV and hook it up to Sgt Stachnik’s so we could tow them out.

Just as he was about to hook up the tow cable to Sgt Stachnik’s LAV the driver gained consciousness, put the LAV into Drive and did a tight left U turn around us and out the breach.

Operation Medusa has begun. From Sept 3rd to Sept 4th it was hell for many of us. This is my first hand account as an Infantry soldier from 1 RCR, Charles company, 7platoon, 31A.

The night of Sept 2nd 2006, PLANS HAVE CHANGED.

Instead of us in 7 Platoon conducting battle prep. We have orders from the very top to go out and conduct a “Feint” tonight.

Our orders are to head out into the middle of the Arghandab. A dry river bed with little to no cover and stay the night. We will be heading out before last light so that we can been seen by the enemy as we move into position.

The move is to mislead the Taliban into thinking our attack is starting at night.

It however put our platoon in an extremely vulnerable position. We were sandwiched between the rest of Charles company with battalion HQ on one side and up to 200 Taliban on our other side.

Thankfully after a few hours our CO at the time was able to change the plan and brought us back in to our battle position to continue getting ready for our attack the next morning.

The Shura

A meeting of all the village leader’s, CAF leadership and ANA. They can get quite spicy at times.

The point is to hear their concerns and needs, try to meet those needs and solve their issues “winning the heats and minds”.

Shura’s are also a huge target for attacks but also for infiltration from tban members. We have had Tban members sit in with village elders in a Shura.

What’s left of 31 Bravos LAV after it was stuck in an anti tank ditch during our attack and subsequent withdrawal from the white school on Sept 3rd 2006.

It was hit with 2 2000 pound JDAMs do destroy it and the equipment left inside.

Sometimes things had to be done a little unconventionally in Afghanistan.

Like removing a container off of the back of a Jingle truck. This was filmed from Patrol Base Wilson in its early years during TF 306.

The base later ballooned in size and even added an airfield for Kiowa helicopters.

2 very sad A-10s looking for something to shot at.

This was filmed from strong point west on a cold rainy day. The Tban were generally fair weather soldiers meaning they only really fought in dry sunny conditions. We were ok with that, no one likes fighting in the rain and cold.
