It is with deep sadness that we say final farewell to Gunnvör Daníelsdóttir Ásmundsson, the 101st Fjallkona of Manitoba, who passed peacefully on Christmas Eve.

Gunnvör was a straight talker, not known for beating around the bush, but did so in a sincere way and was deeply respected by everyone that had the fortune of knowing her. You did not say no to Gunnvör when she asked for your assistance. She was extremely energetic and worked tirelessly to preserve and promote Icelandic heritage in North America, especially in Manitoba. Gunnvör volunteered for many, many organizations promoting Icelandic heritage and participated in countless activities. Gunnvör worked for some years for the Consulate General in Winnipeg and assisted and guided a few Consuls Generals during her time there.

Gunnvör will be fondly remembered, and her legacy will live for a long time. She will be missed.

Yesterday, the Jón Sigurðsson Day was celebrated in Winnipeg, but the day coincides with the National Day of Iceland. A celebration was held at the Scandinavian Cultural Centre, where the Sólskríkjan Choir sang in Icelandic, the Scandi Folk Dancers performed, and local jazz musician Jasmine Henry (of Icelandic descent, of course) sang a mix of Icelandic and Manitoban songs. Speeches were given, including an address by the Consul-General. The 101st Fjallkona of Manitoba, Gunnvör Asmundsson, was in attendance. Thanks to the Icelandic Canadian Frón and Jon Sigurdsson Chapter IODE for organizing the event.

For fans of Icelandic author Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir, you might be interested in the following initiative of the Swiss Film Club of Canada, which is currently offering free online access to a Canada–Switzerland co-production, Hôtel Silence, directed by Léa Pool. This long feature film is based on Ör, a novel by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first large group of Icelandic settlers in Manitoba, leading to the founding of New Iceland on the shores of Lake Winnipeg. To celebrate this milestone, Her Honour Anita R. Neville, Lieutenant Governor of MB, held a reception at Government House in Winnipeg. The event was attended by a large number of people of Icelandic descent, and the air was filled with laughter and joy.
In her address, Her Honour acknowledged the significant contribution of the Icelandic community to the development of Manitoba. The Honourable Nellie Kennedy, Minister of Sport, Culture, Heritage, and Tourism, then discussed the impact of The Icelandic Festival of Manitoba. Dr. Ryan Eyford, Associate Professor at the University of Winnipeg, spoke about The New Iceland Heritage Museum in Gimli. Finally, Vilhjálmur Wiium, Consul General of Iceland, emphasized the excellent and long-lasting relations between Canadians of Icelandic descent and Iceland. It was a wonderful event, and we thank Her Honour for hosting it.
