Germany, in Eleven Books – A summer reading list for Politis to the Point.

Germany has the irritating habit of being many things at once: seminar room and shop floor, soccer lab and cat nursery, constitutional experiment and cocktail bar where someone named Gereon Rath is having an unusually consequential evening. The eleven books below are not a syllabus. They are eleven trapdoors: each opens under the reader's feet, and suddenly there is a republic, a recipe, a rescue, or a joke with a very sharp little knife in it.

Eleven books, ten in English and one in German, moving from Weimar noir and graphic Berlin to hidden industry, cats, soccer, conscience, Jewish life, republicanism, culinary memory, and diplomatic inheritance.

A summer reading list for Politis to the Point, submitted by Dirk Roland Haupt, Minister Counselor and Chargé d'Affaires a.i., Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Nicosia.

Poetry, multilingualism—and the cats of Cyprus

At the initiative of the Representation of the 🇪🇺 European Commission in Cyprus and the Directorate-General for Translation, the 🇩🇪 German Embassy Nicosia is taking part in the video-and-poetry challenge of the Heads of Mission of EU Member State embassies in 🇨🇾 Cyprus.

Our contribution is a small tribute to the 🐈 cats of Cyprus: to the island’s many beautiful, proud and wonderful 🐈‍⬛ cats—and also to those for whom life on the streets is harsh: the sick, disabled, hungry and emaciated cats who need protection, care and a home.

In the background of the video are Shmul and Shmerke. The two tomcat brothers once lived with disabilities as strays on the streets of Nicosia until, at about five years of age, they found a loving home. There, they blossomed, thrived and became wonderful family members.

At the same time, the video is a small bow to the cats in the treasury of German fairy tales — from Puss in Boots to the cat of the Bremen Town Musicians, whose meow can send even robbers running.

Partnerships are built before they are announced.

They are built in serious conversations, in shared infrastructure, in research that becomes operational, in start-ups that become companies, and in the trust that allows institutions to work across borders.

That spirit shaped "From Space to Solutions."

For Germany, Cyprus is a serious and growing partner in Europe’s space economy. Cyprus brings location, agility, regional relevance, and a strong need for space-based services in areas such as water, wildfires, maritime monitoring, food systems, urban heat, and disaster response. Germany brings industrial depth, scientific excellence, and long experience in turning advanced technology into practical systems.

The cooperation with the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence is central to this story. Eratosthenes connects research, infrastructure, public policy, entrepreneurship, and international cooperation. The longstanding contribution of German partners, including the German Aerospace Center (DLR), has helped make that cooperation tangible.

The next step should be equally practical: strengthening Space BIC by Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence as a future ESA Business Incubation Centre Cyprus. That would give young Cypriot companies a European frame of credibility, mentoring, market access, and technological ambition.

The German Embassy is grateful to the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry for organizing a forum that placed the discussion where it belongs: at the meeting point of science, business, public need, and European strategy.

Space should not be spectacle. It should be infrastructure for better decisions, stronger economies, and more resilient societies.

From space to solutions — not as a slogan, but as a test of modern space policy.

On June 8, 2026, Nicosia hosted a forum built around a practical question: how can space technology help societies make better decisions on Earth?

As Platinum Sponsor, the German Embassy in Nicosia was proud to support "From Space to Solutions," a high-level forum bringing together public authorities, space agencies, researchers, industry, start-ups, and users. The discussion moved quickly from orbit to Earth: from satellite data to agriculture, from artificial intelligence to climate resilience, from geoinformation to maritime awareness, from research infrastructure to trusted services.

Germany’s perspective is clear. Space is no longer only about distance, discovery, or national prestige. It is about whether data can help farmers manage water, ports detect risk, cities prepare for heat, and governments respond faster to crises.

Cyprus has a distinct role to play. As an Associate Member of the European Space Agency, it now has a stronger institutional pathway into Europe’s space ecosystem. Its value will not lie in imitating the scale of larger space nations. It will lie in combining regional relevance, scientific competence, entrepreneurial energy, and access to European programs.

That is why the German message at this forum was simple:

Germany, ESA and U.S. partners: space technology for real-world solutions.

From space to solutions — in the most literal sense.

As Platinum Sponsor of "From Space to Solutions" (June 8, 2026), the German Embassy in Nicosia and its Chargé d’Affaires a.i., Minister Counselor Dirk Roland Haupt, a mentor at the Space Business Incubation Center (BIC) by Eratosthenes Center of Excellence, are proud to support a forum built around a simple but demanding idea: space policy must prove itself on Earth.

Satellite data, Earth observation, artificial intelligence, secure communications, geoinformation, and high technology are no longer separate expert worlds. They are becoming one operating environment for public authorities, companies, researchers, ports, cities, emergency services, farmers, and investors.

Germany sees Cyprus as a serious and growing partner in this effort. Cyprus brings location, agility, regional relevance, and a new institutional pathway into Europe’s space ecosystem as an Associate Member of the European Space Agency (ESA). Germany brings industrial depth, scientific excellence, and long experience in turning advanced technology into usable systems. ESA provides the European framework. Our American partners add capability, scale, and operational experience.

That is the meaning of the message on our stand:
Germany, ESA and U.S. partners: space technology for real-world solutions.

This video captures the spirit of a day dedicated not to space as spectacle, but to space as infrastructure for better decisions, stronger economies, and more resilient societies.
