“Digging into Languages
Seamus Heaney in Cypriot Greek Translation”

📍Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR), Ermou 285, Nicosia
📆7pm, Thursday 17 September

Translation was at the heart of Seamus Heaney’s poetry, from reflections on how the name of his childhood family farm, Mossbawn, contains different linguistic histories (in ‘Belderg’, 1974) to the many translations he carried out over his six-decade writing career, such as Sweeney Astray: A Version from the Irish (1983) or The Burial at Thebes: A Version of Sophocles' Antigone (2004).

Digging into Languages celebrates Heaney’s work by making it sing in Cypriot Greek, featuring new translations by Thea Paraskeva. Inspired by her focus on Heaney’s farming poetry from Death of a Naturalist (1966), we will hear music from Cypriot and Irish traditions, before the event concludes with a discussion on the making of Thea’s translations with Dr Spyros Armostis, Dr Vasso Giannakopoulou and Dr James Little.

Entrance free of charge

All are welcome – Tá fáilte roimh chách – Ούλλοι|ες εν’ ευπρόσδεκτοι|ες!
Kindly supported by UCY Department of English Studies, the Embassy of Ireland in Cyprus and the Estate of Seamus Heaney.

Today in Nicosia, the Embassy hosted the first Heads of EU Missions lunch as part of our Irish Presidency programme, with Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Constantinos Kombos. The lunch provided a meaningful exchange on the external challenges facing the Union and expanded on issues linked to the main pillars of the Irish Presidency. It also offered a valuable opportunity to hear the Minister’s reflections on the outcomes and actions taken during the Cypriot Presidency over the past six months.

We were delighted to welcome Maria Antoniadou and Ivi Theocharous to the Embassy today for the “Ambassador for a Day” initiative.

This initiative gives young women interested in diplomacy the chance to shadow a female ambassador in Cyprus. Maria and Ivi experienced Embassy life up close, learned about our daily operations and discovered what it takes to be an Irish diplomat.

Their visit coincides with the International Day of Women in Diplomacy on 24 June, celebrating women's vital roles in international affairs. We wish them both the best of luck in their future endeavours, and who knows, perhaps they will be the future leaders shaping global cooperation!

Great turnout last night at ARTos House for our Bloomsday celebration. We are always amazed to see such strong interest from Cypriot audiences in James Joyce and Irish literature.

Captivating performances by Morgan Crowley, Erika Begeti and Ioanna Papamichalopoulou who brought the spirit of Joyce vividly to life.

Many thanks to Ideogramma and The James Joyce Centre Dublin for their support in making the evening possible!
