Message from Ambassador Dr. Nicholas O'Brien:

It is both a privilege and an honour to represent Ireland in Germany. Ireland and Germany celebrated 90 years of diplomatic relations in 2019 but, of course, relations between our two peoples stretch back much further than this. St Killian was an early arrival in Germany when he travelled from his native Cavan to Würzburg in 686 and left an enduring mark on German-Irish relations, which is still celebrated in Germany today. Germany is a key partner of Ireland and this is reflected in the strength of relations at both official and personal level. We are both proud members of the European Union and share common values which bind us together. We are also close trading partners and this can be seen in the ever-increasing levels of trade and investment and also in the field of scientific research. We are particularly fortunate that Enterprise Ireland, IDA, Tourism Ireland and Bord Bia are all represented in Germany. Our cultural links stretch back over the centuries and this is reflected in the appreciation of many Germans for our music, writing and art. Indeed, many German readers have come to know Ireland through Heinrich Böll’s ‘Irisches Tagebuch’. I would like to extend a particular welcome to newly arrived Irish people in Germany. Please have a look at the resources available on our Embassy website, including the Irische Monatsbuch. We look forward to working with you through the many Irish cultural organisations in Germany. Together with our newly-opened Consulate General in Frankfurt and our Honorary Consulates in Stuttgart, Cologne and Hamburg, we are committed to deepening relations with our German hosts and serving the needs of Irish citizens. Ambassador Collins visited the Hamburger Kunsthalle on Friday to view the works of Ailbhe Ni Bhriain and Willie Doherty, guided by Kunsthalle director Alexander Klar and exhibition curator Corinne Diserens.

The exhibition is a legacy of Zeitgeist Irland 24, when curators from Hamburg travelled to Ireland for studio visits organised by Centre Culturel Irlandais Rosetta Beaugendre.

Ambassador Collins also met with members of the Irish arts and creative community of Hamburg and Flensburg to discuss increasing cultural activities in the region. This followed a meeting with Senator for Culture, Dr. Carsten Brosda, and attendance at the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra concert at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg , supported by the Irish Government as part of Ireland’s EU Presidency cultural programme.

Thanks to all we met in Hamburg for the warm welcome and the great exchanges on possibilities for future collaboration.

Das Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra trat gestern Abend in der Elbphilharmonie Hamburg in Hamburg auf. Die Tournee wird von der irischen Regierung im Rahmen des Kulturprogramms der irischen EU-Ratspräsidentschaft unterstützt.

🇺🇦 Botschafter Makeiev und 🇮🇪 Botschafterin Collins besuchten das Konzert gemeinsam mit dem Hamburger Kultursenator Dr. Carsten Brosda.

Irlands EU-Ratspräsidentschaft steht unter dem Motto „Ní neart go cur le chéile“ – ohne Einheit gibt es keine Stärke.

Irland hat mehr als 670 Millionen Euro zur Unterstützung der Ukraine bereitgestellt und über 120.000 Ukrainer im Rahmen des vorübergehenden Schutzes aufgenommen.
Die 🇮🇪🇪🇺-Ratspräsidentschaft legt den Schwerpunkt auf die Aufrechterhaltung der politischen, militärischen und finanziellen Unterstützung für die Ukraine und treibt gleichzeitig deren Weg zur Mitgliedschaft in der Europäischen Union voran.

Kulturdiplomatie hat sich als wirkungsvolles Mittel erwiesen, um Verständnis, Solidarität und dauerhafte Partnerschaften über Grenzen hinweg aufzubauen.
Neben den militärischen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Bemühungen ist die ukrainische Kultur während dieses Krieges eine Quelle der Stärke und Hoffnung geblieben.
🇺🇦 und 🇮🇪 sind dankbar für den herzlichen Empfang in Hamburg durch Senator Brosda und die Elbphilharmonie, insbesondere durch Intendant Christoph Lieben-Seutter.

In seiner Eröffnungsrede hob Botschafter Makeiev hervor, dass die Tournee des Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra das Projekt „Safe School“ der Olena-Zelenska-Stiftung unterstützt, das ukrainischen Kindern hilft, auch während des Krieges den Präsenzunterricht in sicheren und angemessen ausgestatteten Schulen fortzusetzen. Das Projekt umfasst den Bau moderner Schutzräume, die Modernisierung von Schulküchen und Kantinen sowie die Bereitstellung zuverlässiger Energiequellen für Bildungseinrichtungen.

Dem Konzert gingen politische Treffen vor, die von den beiden Botschaftern gemeinsam abgehalten wurden, sowie eine Führung durch das Rathaus durch Senator Brosda.

Irish Day at The Last Rose of Summer with Siobhán Armstrong🪉☘️🌹

There was a full house today as acclaimed Irish harpist Siobhán Armstrong returned to Berlin for the Last Rose of Summer Festival. Her concert was the opening performance of the festival which runs until the 18th August.

Siobhán transported the audience through the musical world of Ireland from the 16th to 18th centuries on the Irish harp – the so-called Brian Ború harp, Ireland’s national symbol.

We were delighted to continue our longstanding partnership with Mendelssohn-Remise Berlin , celebrating the 12th Irish Day presented as part of the festival.

⭐️Ulster Youth Orchestra at Young Euro Classic⭐️

Deputy Head of Mission James Kilcourse and Head of Culture Candice Gordon attended a performance yesterday of the UYO 🎶 along with the British Ambassador to Germany, Andrew Mitchell.

The wonderful performance was part of the Young Euro Classic Festival held annually at the Konzerthaus Berlin . The concert marked a special milestone as the Ulster Youth Orchestra returned to the festival stage for the first time in 18 years.

Additionally, Deputy Head of Mission Kilcourse and Ambassador Mitchell visited the UYO during rehearsals on Tuesday 11th August. The visit took place at FEZ-Berlin , Europe’s largest non-profit cultural and educational centre for children, young people and families.

They spoke with talented young musicians from the UYO, as well as students from local music school Joseph-Schmidt in Treptow-Köpenick.

The visit provided an opportunity to meet representatives of Young Euro Classic, the Landesmusikakademie Berlin , and the dedicated Ulster Youth Orchestra team.

Congratulations to the orchestra, conductor Jac Van Steen, soloist Rebecca Murphy , composer Sam Kane , and all involved on this remarkable achievement!

Heute ist es sechs Wochen her, dass Irland den Vorsitz im Rat der Europäischen Union Inne übernommen hat.

Der irische Ratsvorsitz konzentriert sich auf die drei Prioritäten Wettbewerbsfähigkeit, Werte und Sicherheit. Irland wird in den kommenden sechs Monaten die Arbeit des Rates koordinieren und wichtige europäische Themen voranbringen. Hier in Deutschland wird Team Irland mit politischen Gesprächen, regionalen Besuchen und kulturellen Veranstaltungen aktiv zum Erfolg der EU-Ratspräsidentschaft beitragen.

Von hochrangigen Gesprächen in Berlin bis zu Kulturprojekten wie Tonnta na hEorpa und der Unterstützung der Invincible Tour des Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra: Die kommenden Monate stehen im Zeichen europäischer Zusammenarbeit, gemeinsamer Werte und einer starken Zukunft für Europa.

🇪🇺European Youth Orchestra (EUYO) at Young Euro Classic🇪🇺

🎺The European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) performed as part of the 2026 Young Euro Classic festival, held annually at the Konzerthaus Berlin.

🎼Founded in 1976, the EUYO celebrates it’s 50th anniversary this year, marking five decades of bringing together Europe’s exceptional young talent and promoting international friendship through music.

🎻Ireland, as President of the Council of the European Union, supported this year’s performance in Berlin. Deputy Head of Mission, James Kilcourse, delivered remarks, extending special congratulations to all exceptional musicians from across the EU and the conductor, Elim Chan. He highlighted Ireland’s EU Presidency priorities, as well as the unique ability of music to connect people across cultures and borders. He was also delighted to meet Irish violist, Shane Quinn, and his family from Trim, Co. Meath.

🥁Remarks were also delivered by EUYO Artistic Director Marshall Marcus and Barbara Gessler, Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Germany.

🎶Young Euro Classic continues until 16 August with an international programme full of discovery and musical treasures and featuring the Ulster Youth Orchestra performing on 12 August.

Ambassador Maeve Collins, Embassy colleagues and their friends & families were amongst the thousands of people to participate in this year’s Berlin Christopher Street Day ( ) Parade in Berlin. 🏳️‍🌈

The Embassy of Ireland team walked alongside diplomatic colleagues from across the world and in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community, advocating for greater inclusion, acceptance and equality.

The annual celebration of love and diversity ended in a horrific attack, which Ireland condemns in the strongest terms. Our thoughts are with all those affected, and our gratitude goes out to the emergency responders and volunteers who continue to provide invaluable support.

Today, the Irish flag flies at half-mast at our Embassy.

Our Chargé d’Affaires Michael Treacy joined diplomatic colleagues at a vigil on Pariser Platz this afternoon.

Ireland is of our commitment to LGBTIQIA+ rights and we will continue to prioritise the promotion and protection of the rights of LGBTQIA+ persons at home and abroad.

🗣️ Ein Besuch in den stand diese Woche auch auf der Agenda von Botschafterin Maeve Collins.

Zum Auftakt Irlands Vorsitz im Rat der EU () wurde Botschafterin Collins zu einer Sitzung des Ausschusses für die Angelegenheiten der Europäischen Union (kurz: EU-Ausschuss) eingeladen. 🇪🇺

⭐ Wettbewerbsfähigkeit, Werte & Sicherheit: Botschafterin Collins hat einen Vortrag zu Irlands Prioritäten für unsere EU-Ratspräsidentschaft gehalten, die auf diesen drei Eckpfeilern beruhen.

🎤 Nach ihrem Vortrag hat die Botschafterin Fragen von den Fraktionen beantwortet.
Die Fragen der Abgeordneten bezogen sich auf alle drei übergeordneten Prioritäten Irlands. Eine Auswahl:
❓ Welche Maßnahmen zur Bürokratieabbau/ Vereinfachung von Regulierung haben wir im Visier? Wie könnten diese zur Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der EU beitragen?
❓ Was wird gemacht, um die Gleichstellung von LGBTQIA+ Personen aktiv voranzutreiben? Wie wird die Strategie der EU zur Bekämpfung der Armut weiterverfolgt?
❓ Wie sieht die weitere Unterstützung der Ukraine aus? Wie wird das Europäische Schutzschild für die Demokratie umgesetzt?

⭐ Herzlichen Dank, Frau Bundesministerin Karin Prien , Bundesministerium für Bildung, Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend BMBFSFJ, dass Sie bei unserem ersten Treffen für EU-Botschafter:innen in Berlin während Irlands Vorsitz im Rat der EU dabei waren! 🇮🇪🇪🇺🇩🇪

Im Laufe Irlands EU-Ratsvorsitzes wird Botschafterin Maeve Collins eine Reihe von Treffen für EU-Botschafter:innen mit Ehrengästen aus der deutschen Politik und Gesellschaft veranstalten. Die Veranstaltungen bieten den Botschafter:innen eine weitere Gelegenheit an, direkt in Kontakt mit Minister:innen sowie Vertreter:innen verschiedener Bundesministerien und Organisationen zu treten.

Die Reihe fing gestern mit Bundesministerin für Bildung, Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend Karin Prien an.

🎤 Nach Grußworten von Botschafterin Collins und Bundesministerin Prien gab es eine Fragerunde zwischen den Botschafter:innen und der Ministerin.
Die Fragen umfassten das gesamte Portfolio der Ministerin von der Geschlechtergleichstellung und der Stärkung der Rolle der Frau im Hinblick auf finanzielle Unabhängigkeit zu bildungspolitischen Fragen sowie Jugendschutz im Internet.
