AI can raise scores and still undermine learning. When AI substitutes for mental effort, it can reduce opportunities to develop critical thinking.

Critical thinking develops when learners analyse, evaluate, question and reason. If AI does these tasks for them, students may have fewer opportunities to build those cognitive skills themselves.

In one study of nearly 27,000 secondary students, those who used AI for their homework earned higher scores and completed it in less time. But when the same students completed exams without AI, their results declined within six months, most sharply among those who had completed their homework the fastest.

At Digital Learning Week, UNESCO promotes reflection and dialogue on how educators can use AI systems to foster critical thinking and learning, instead of doing the thinking for students.

🎉 Great conversations and lots of inspiring volunteers at the Federal President's Citizens' Festival at Villa Hammerschmidt!

In the UN Bonn tent, we joined colleagues from across the UN family to celebrate 30 years of Bonn as a UN city. It was fantastic to meet so many people and to talk about how skills development and TVET can help build brighter futures.

We were also honoured to meet Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Elke Büdenbender, as well as Mayor of Bonn Guido Déus.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with us or to test their knowledge in the UNESCO-UNEVOC quiz. 🙌

What should education look like after 2030? UNESCO is asking young people aged 11–30 worldwide to weigh in on three key questions:

1. Your vision: What kind of world do you want to live in?
2. The education you want: What changes are needed in the way you learn?
3. Your action: What are you willing to do to make it happen?

Your experience is the expertise we need. It only takes a few minutes to share your views and help redefine the classroom of the future.
