Squads from across U.S. Army Europe and Africa competed at the Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany, from July 30 to Aug. 6, 2026, during the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Best Squad Competition. The competition assessed squad effectiveness, communication and cohesion, as well as each Soldier’s technical and tactical proficiency, endurance and resilience. Teams advanced through a demanding series of events, including the Army Combat Fitness Test, live-fire ranges, day and night land navigation, the Iron Squad Challenge, Leader Reaction Course, squad situational training exercise lanes, a written exam and a formal board. Each event required Soldiers to perform under pressure, solve problems and operate as a cohesive squad. The winning squad advances to the Headquarters, Department of the Army Best Squad Competition and represents U.S. Army Europe and Africa at the Army-level competition. One noncommissioned officer and one junior Soldier from the winning squad will earn the titles of the Army’s Best NCO and Best Soldier of the Year, respectively. The competition showcased readiness, lethality, warfighting proficiency and teamwork across the formation.
