Our doctoral researcher Sjard Braun has just returned from presenting his research at the 46th Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference, held this year at the University of Alabama.

Reflecting on the conference, Sjard said: “What a privilege to share my work at the premier entrepreneurship research conference in the world. Presenting to such an engaged room of researchers was exactly the kind of rigorous, constructive dialogue BCERC is known for. Thank you to Babson College, the University of Alabama, and Culverhouse College of Business for hosting such an excellent event, and thank you to my co-author Mari Suoranta!”

This week, our faculty member Dr. Daria Hakola attended two European academic conferences in Bodø, Norway.

At the Nordic Conference on Small Business ( ), Daria co-chaired a special track on entrepreneurial decision-making alongside colleagues from the University of Southern Denmark and Södertörn University. She also presented her work-in-progress on entrepreneurial hustle and chaired a dedicated session on entrepreneurial decision-making amidst uncertainty.
At the 3E Conference, Daria co-organized a Professional Development Workshop introducing an innovative approach to team formation via role-play in entrepreneurship classrooms, together with colleagues from the University of Naples Federico II, the University of Southern Denmark, and Heriot-Watt University.

We congratulate Daria and her colleagues on their active contributions to the international entrepreneurship research community, and look forward to seeing this work develop further.

The Innovative Marketing course, lectured by Mari Suoranta, concluded with an inspiring final seminar where student teams presented their solutions for real business case challenges.

One of the featured cases was for the startup Green Carbon, with two student teams presenting marketing ideas and strategic recommendations for the company. It was great to have Green Carbon CEO Matti Toivonen join us as a panelist for the presentations.

After the session, Matti shared that he was positively surprised by both the quality of the work and how well the teams had understood the assignments and identified the right focus areas. The presentations also sparked several concrete ideas and thoughts on how Green Carbon can move forward with its marketing efforts, and many of the insights will likely be utilized in their future marketing work. Thank you, Matti Toivonen, for joining the course and sharing your valuable feedback with our students! We also thank other guest speakers of the course. IBE alumnus, Marketing Project Manager Karim Elbanna of Neural DSP and Dr. Heini Vanninen of LUT University - Your insights on digital marketing and influencer marketing were highly appreciated!

🔆 The highlight of March for IBE Director Mari Suoranta was a visit to Lund University in Sweden. 🔆

Mari was invited there by a friend and earlier colleague from UC Berkeley Professor Charlotta Johnsson, founder of LU X-Lab makers space among other things. Mari visited several incubators such as HETCH, Ideon, E-commerce Park, LU Venture Lab. Learned about Helsingborg Innovation district development and talked with the LU Innovation director on research commercialization. She got Insights on LU entrepreneurship education from the master's degree program director and on ecosystem research from the founder of their SJK Entrepreneurship Center. All in all, such productive and insightful days with lots of laughter.

We welcomed researchers to BOOST2, co-hosted by Daria Hakola and Mari Suoranta at the University of Jyväskylä. Officially opened by Vice-Rector Pasi Raiskinmäki and co-branded with European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB)) — and what a workshop it turned out to be! 🌟

🎖️ A huge, heartfelt thank you to the brilliant keynote speakers, Christina Theodoraki and Kim Klyver, for thought-provoking talks that sparked some of the liveliest discussions of the two days! A big thank you to Matti Muhos for the newest GEM 2026 insights!

👏 The Meet the Editors sessions were truly a highlight thanks to Ewald Kibler, Kim Klyver, Christina Theodoraki, Ulla Hytti, and Matti Muhos.

💯The roundtable feedback sessions were equally special, with Bjorn-Tore Flaten, Prince Baah-Peprah, Pekka Stenholm, Ulla Hytti, Tanja Leppäaho, Matti Muhos, Ewald Kibler, Christina Theodoraki, and Kim Klyver giving so generously of their time and expertise. Exactly the kind of collegial spirit BOOST is all about.

🤝And what a joy it was to welcome Vilja Laaksonen from Aava & Bang Oy and Dr. Kari Aho from Secapp - two research-friendly growth-oriented companies to join us for our business-academia collaboration discussion on the second afternoon. That conversation reminded us all why bridging these two worlds matters so much.

💟 BOOST 2 was everything we hoped it would be — warm, stimulating, and full of the kind of connections that move research forward.

💡 ⚡ Jyväskylä is a great place to develop new business ideas thanks to its strong networks and active innovation community.

Last Thursday’s FORTHEM Alliance Startup Day highlighted exactly this. The event, held in the City Hall of Jyväskylä, focused on the theme of Sport & Health Technologies.
The keynote speakers were Tero Myllymäki from Firstbeat Technologies, Nina Rautiainen from EBAN Sports, and Taija Lappeteläinen from Jyväskylän kaupunki - City of Jyväskylä. They shared their experiences working in sports, health, and wellbeing, and discussed the business opportunities in these fields.

Participants also learned about the HHub - The Nordic Health, Sports and Wellbeing Ecosystem and Hippos platform, the EBAN Sports network, and angel investors, as well as opportunities for developing science-based startups.

In the second half of the event, we heard several great pitches presenting different ideas. The presenters received feedback and comments from the expert panel. Great work, everyone! 🎉

Events like this show how Jyväskylä offers great opportunities to develop ideas and build new collaborations through strong local networks. 💡 ⚡
