With warm temperatures forecasted again this week, many young people will be spending more time outdoors.

If you're a parent, carer, grandparent or friend, please take a few moments to talk to them about staying safe around water before they head out.

When the weather is hot, rivers, lakes, canals, reservoirs and quarries can look like a tempting place to cool down. However, open water can be much colder than it appears, and hidden hazards beneath the surface, such as deep water, currents and submerged objects, can make it unsafe.

Please help us share this message this summer.

Lancashire is set to see yet another heat wave with temperature still to increase.
Our staff have been carrying out Swift Water Rescues drills in best preparedness for what may occur.

Photo 1 is Firefighter Gervais in his Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which helps maintain his core temperature when entering open water (Site Rowley lake Burnley & Burnley Fire station)

With temperatures rising, many people will be spending more time outdoors and visiting Lancashire’s rivers, lakes, canals, reservoirs and other open water sites. While these places can look inviting on a hot day, not all open water is safe.

Between May and August, almost half of all accidental drownings in the UK occur and the risk increases when temperatures rise.

When the average maximum temperature reaches 25°C or above:
• The risk of accidental drowning is five times higher than on cooler days.
• More people enter the water, with over half of those who drowned having been swimming.
If you’re heading near water this summer:
• Choose supervised swimming areas where possible.
• Never enter the water to help someone else, call 999 and encourage them to Float to Live.
• Learn the Float to Live technique: lie on your back, keep your head back with your ears submerged, relax, spread your arms and legs, and control your breathing.

Our teams are out across Lancashire speaking with young people and sharing vital water safety advice to help everyone stay safe this summer.

Monday Night Drills.
Understanding and use of Gas Monitors.

Scene scenario.

Incident Call- Road traffic collision (RTC)
Person trapped, Vehicle omitting smoke and potential gases.

When and why do firefighters use gas monitors?

Firefighters use gas monitors at incidents where hazardous gases or unsafe oxygen levels may be present, such as fires, gas leaks, or confined spaces.
They help detect dangers that can’t be seen or smelled, allowing crews to work safely, protect the public, and make informed decisions throughout an incident.

Firefighter gas monitors are rugged, portable devices essential for detecting hazardous atmospheres during fires and hazmat responses.
Able to track carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), oxygen (O2), and flammable gases (LEL), also detecting toxins like hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and VOCs

Every reading helps protect lives.

Have you spotted one of these Water Safety Rescue Boards near your local canal, lake or reservoir?

This board, located near the canal by the University of Lancashire halls in Burnley, is one of a number installed at high-risk open water locations across Lancashire. They're designed to provide life-saving information in an emergency, including location details for emergency services and access to rescue equipment.

As part of Drowning Prevention Week, we're reminding everyone to stay safe around open water and take a moment to familiarise yourself with these boards if you see one.

Open Water Drills.

When hydrants aren’t always accessible we will use open water if available.

We can also use a Lightweight Portable Pump also known as a LPP.
It is a critical, mobile firefighting tool that firefighters can carry to locations where standard fire engines cannot reach, such as difficult terrain, bush areas, or narrow, remote communities.

Improvise, adapt and overcome.

Water safety and flood rescue drills…

Planning a family day out by the water this half term?

Help keep everyone safe:
• Stay away from the water’s edge where possible
• Keep children within arm’s reach and supervised at all times
• Choose lifeguarded or supervised areas whenever you can

Enjoy the sunshine and stay safe around the water.

Training drills help firefighters stay prepared for real emergencies, giving crews the chance to practise vital skills, strengthen teamwork and build confidence under pressure.

From learning how to use equipment safely to working through different emergency scenarios, every drill helps crews respond quickly and effectively when it matters most.

Heading off camping this summer?

A few safety reminders before you go:

✔ Keep cooking stoves and open flames well away from tents and materials that can burn
✔ Never leave stoves, candles or flames unattended
✔ Make sure all equipment is in good working order before you use it
✔ Fully extinguish anything used for cooking or heat before you go to sleep

Small steps can help reduce the risk of fire when you’re outdoors.
