Canvey Lake sediment testing
Independent specialist consultants have completed detailed testing of sediment from Canvey Lake to support plans for dredging work.
What was tested?
Three sediment samples were taken from different areas of Canvey Lake and tested for a wide range of substances, including metals, hydrocarbons, asbestos, cyanide and other potential contaminants.
What did the testing find?
The assessment concluded that the sediment is classed as non-hazardous waste. No hazardous properties were identified in any of the samples tested.
The report found no evidence of significant contamination and identified no known sewage-related inputs or major pollution incidents affecting the sediment.
What does this mean?
This is positive news for the Canvey Lake improvement programme. The findings help inform the Council's plans to dredge the Lake and improve water quality as part of the wider restoration project.
Will the sediment be removed?
Yes. The report confirms the sediment can be managed as non-hazardous dredging spoil.
Why is dredging needed?
Over time, silt has built up in the Lake from natural materials such as decaying vegetation, bird droppings and sediment washed into the Lake through the wider drainage network. Removing this accumulated material is an important step in improving water quality and supporting the Lake's long-term recovery.
What are the next steps?
We will use this information, together with the Silt Depth Survey to design a dredging plan that targets the areas with the most silt and identifies the most effective method of removal.
We are currently preparing an application to obtain a Flood Risk Activity Permit (FRAP) from the Environment Agency for permission to dredge the Lake.
This information will support the Council’s specification as it prepares to go out to procurement for specialist contractors to deliver the dredging programme.
