"Item. It is statute, and the King forbiddis, that na man play at the fute-ball"

As the World Cup prepares to kick off over the pond, it's worth remembering that the beautiful game has always been popular in Scotland - so much so, that King James I banned playing the game in 1424 - and the following 'item' indicates why: clearly too many people were playing football when they should have been practising their archery skills!

The lecture marks the arrival at Innerpeffray of a gold pocket watch which belonged to William Drummond, 4th Viscount Strathallan, a noted Jacobite. Moffat will speak about his book War Paths and the involvement of Strathallan in the Jacobite story.

Many thanks to Roderick Wordie for sharing a wonderful afternoon with a rapt audience last Saturday, regaling us with enthralling tales of his grandfather Sir James Wordie's experiences on Shackleton's 'Endurance' expedition. A real treat also to see some of his grandfather's artefacts from his days of polar exploration.
