Democracy cannot be taken for granted. It must be safeguarded and practised anew every day.
Germany has experienced this first-hand throughout its history; its first democracy was established in 1919. However, it came to an end in 1933. This was followed by a period of dictatorship, war and the division of Germany, symbolised by the Berlin Wall. Places such as Niederkirchnerstrasse in Berlin serve as a reminder of this history.
In 1990, 36 years ago, reunification was achieved through free elections. This was driven by the peaceful revolution of the people in the GDR and made possible by international diplomacy.

As we wrap up this busy week, we wanted to thank the Minister for Europe and Regional Development, Melanie Walter and her delegation from Lower Saxony for coming to Scotland.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

During her visit, the Minister spoke about regional development with Cabinet Secretary Gillian Martin and about European affairs with Minister Stephen Gethins. Furthermore, she participated in an expert discussion on rural and social development at the University of St Andrews and learnt more about the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal. Minister Walter also met with Scottish organisations in a roundtable discussion over strengthening the idea of Europe. The Minister also took the opportunity to speak to representatives of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a close partner of Lower Saxony, especially with a view to the joint innovation and research fund.

It was a pleasure to have you in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 to discuss these important issues and celebrate German Unity Day 🇩🇪 together!

This week we welcomed a delegation from the Council of Elders of the Schleswig-Holstein State Parliament, led by the President of the State Parliament, Kristina Herbst to Scotland.

The delegation had exciting talks about artificial intelligence, cyber security and digital innovation in the health sector.
The visit was rounded off with a meeting with the Presiding Officer and Members of the Scottish Parliament.

What a great evening it was!✨

We were delighted to celebrate the Day of German Unity together with the Ministry for Science and Culture from Lower Saxony and our friends and partners here in Scotland.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇩🇪

It was a wonderful evening featuring speeches by First Minister John Swinney, German Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Susanne Baumann and Minister for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony Falko Mohrs.

As part of a tradition from Lower Saxony, our guests enjoyed the special act by the Bruchmeister, who showed us an iconic drink from Hannover: Lüttje Lage, which is consumed simultaneously from two glasses, one filled with a light b**r and the other with, in our case, Hullmann Korn.

We would also like to thank the wonderful German Army Band Kassel for performing at our event.🎶

Lower Saxony and Scotland are working very closely together, in particular through the Joint Research and Innovation Scheme. This significant grant scheme was set up by Lower Saxony and the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2025 and funds joint research.
The wonderful atmosphere during the event was testimony of the overall excellent German - Scottish relations, which we wish to further expand.🤝🏼

European Day of Languages is coming up on 26 September!🌍🗣️

To mark the occasion, we visited The Edinburgh Academy to talk about the importance of learning foreign languages - especially German 😉 - and what it takes to be a good diplomat.
From connecting with people and understanding different perspectives to communicating across cultures, languages play a vital role in diplomacy.

A big thank you to Edinburgh Academy for having us and for giving the opportunity to meet your great students. We hope they’ll share the experience that it is great fun to learn a foreign language.

We were delighted to join the launch of the Tartan Parade 2027 in Edinburgh and celebrate the strong and longstanding connection between Scotland and Germany.🇩🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We are especially pleased about the plans for the first-ever Twin City Tartan Parade in Munich in 2029, marking the 75th anniversary of the city twinning between Edinburgh and Munich.
Tartan Parade Scotland is looking forward to bringing this special celebration to Munich together with partners from both cities. We can’t wait to be part of this journey and celebrate together in 2029!🤝🏼🎉

German company Isar Aerospace has made history by sending the first commercial rocket into space from Europe.

The milestone launch took place at 22:12 on 5 September when the company's unmanned 28m-long Spectrum rocket took off from Andøya, Norway, carrying small satellites and an experiment.

Chancellor Merz hailed the launch, calling it “the beginning of a new era”, while Germany's Space Minister Dorothee Bär said it impressively demonstrated Germany's capacity for innovation and technical expertise.
