THIS IS WHAT WAITING FOR HOPE LOOKS LIKE. 💔📞

Every night at Homeless Project Scotland, more than 30 people can call Glasgow City Council ’s Out of Hours Homelessness Service, hoping to hear the words:

“We have somewhere for you tonight.”

They sit in our shelter, phone in hand, waiting… hoping.

And far too often, the answer is:

“There is nothing available.”

Behind every one of those calls is a human being. Someone exhausted. Someone frightened. Someone who simply wants somewhere safe to sleep.

Our volunteers see the disappointment on their faces night after night when that call ends and there is still nowhere for them to go.

A phone call should be the beginning of the route out of homelessness not another dead end.

This photograph isn’t staged.
This is homelessness in Glasgow.
This is happening night after night.

Homeless Project Scotland will continue to be there when that phone rings and when the answer is “nothing available.”

Because nobody should be left without hope. 💙

🗓️ Homelessness does not pause for a bank holiday. In this update, Chris explains that our night shelter is at capacity, with nine sleeping pods outside as Monday turns into Tuesday.

He describes contacting Glasgow City Council’s emergency line over the bank holiday and being unable to secure accommodation for those needing help.

⛺ For our volunteers, that means difficult conversations with people who have come to us hoping for a bed. For those outside, it means another night on the pavement.

Homeless Project Scotland operates 365 days a year because people need support every day. We ask Glasgow City Council to ensure that emergency accommodation can be accessed when it is needed, including weekends and bank holidays.

💬 What should someone be able to expect when they call an emergency homelessness service on a bank holiday? We would like to hear your views.

📞 In Sunday night’s update, Chris describes calling Glasgow City Council’s emergency line for six vulnerable women. Each conversation, he says, lasted 60 seconds or less. All six women were supported inside our shelter, but two people remained outside without a bed.

Chris speaks about how difficult it is to face someone asking for help and explain that there is no space left.

Homeless Project Scotland can document more than 10,000 calls to the homelessness line, raising questions about how many resulted in people receiving the help they needed.

📣 Chris appeals directly to the First Minister of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 John Swinney to visit the shelter, listen to those seeking support and see these circumstances first-hand. Commitments to protecting women and vulnerable people must lead to practical help when they have nowhere to stay.

We ask Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government to work with us so that fewer people face another night on the pavement.

💬 If the First Minister visited our shelter, what would you most want him to understand? Share your thoughts below.

📢 Ivan McKee MSP WHAT WILL YOU DELIVER FOR Homeless Project Scotland

Before being elected, Ivan McKee visited the Homeless Project Scotland soup kitchen and saw our work first-hand.

Following his visit, he described the service as “hugely well organised and professional” and recognised that large numbers of people were using it and that it was clearly a badly needed service.

Today, Ivan McKee is in government as Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Public Service Reform.

So our question is a simple and genuine one:

What will Ivan McKee deliver for Homeless Project Scotland and the people who depend on our services now that he is in a position to help make change happen?

Our volunteers continue to be there night after night, supporting people experiencing homelessness and poverty.

We welcomed Ivan through our doors when he was seeking election. We showed him the reality on the ground. He saw the demand with his own eyes and publicly recognised how badly needed the service was.

We would now welcome Ivan back through those same doors this time as Cabinet Secretary to sit down with us, meet our volunteers and service users, and discuss what practical support can be delivered.

The need he witnessed hasn’t disappeared.

We’re ready to talk. Our door is open. 💙

🛏️ Tonight, Scott shares another encouraging update: no sleeping pods outside our night shelter.

He offers heartfelt thanks to Glasgow City Council for providing accommodation for several women tonight. We appreciate the cooperation that has helped them secure somewhere to stay. 💙

Scott also highlights the men who still need accommodation. We hope to see the same progress for them, with continued support for everyone waiting for a place.

🤝 Thank you, Glasgow City Council. Each person accommodated is a reason to keep this work going.

What would continued nights without sleeping pods mean for Glasgow? Let us know in the comments.
