Ex Gibraltar Dove 2026
UGSAS recently completed an Air Power Study Exercise (APSE) over the course of 3 days in Gibraltar. Students delivered talks about Gibraltar's historical and current importance and visited significant Gibraltar locations. The stands were performed all across the territory including at the top of the Rock of Gibraltar. The tunnels used during WW2 were of particular interest. The APSE involved a lot of walking from location to location with some close encounters with the local wildlife too!

On the final day students were given the opportunity to learn to paddleboard around HMNB Gibraltar, and also enjoy a rib boat tour of the peninsula. The exercise was enjoyed by all from start to finish.
If you're starting or coming back to university this year, this is something you can be part of.

Ex Highland Express 2026
UGSAS students recently took part in Competent Crew training led by an experienced skipper in and around the Hebrides; one of the most beautiful sailing locations in the world. West Coast Scottish weather ensured the students experienced 4 seasons of weather everyday, providing students with the opportunity to practice sailing in all typical weather conditions. Students sailed each morning and spent the afternoons exploring the islands they'd sailed to. This included the famous village of Tobermory, otherwise known as Balamory!

This adventurous training (AT) provided students with the opportunity to try a new skill, and develop qualities like resilience, teamwork, and adaptability.

RAF Cosford Airshow 2026
Last month, two students supported preparations for the RAF Cosford Airshow.
Before the airshow began, lots of work went into the set-up of the aircrew enclosure, hosting visiting aircrew on arrival. This involved working alongside various University Air Squadrons from across the country.
On airshow day, students supported the Tutor Display Team stand, informing the public about the display, aircraft, and equipment, as well as following Burty the Bear on his adventures!
It was a rewarding opportunity for the students to support this major aviation event.
Thank you to the University of Birmingham Air Squadron for the invitation, and to RAF Cosford Airshow for the opportunity to be involved in such a fantastic event.

Wimbledon Championships 2026
Recently, 3 Off Cdts from UGSAS joined other UAS students and personnel from the RAF, British Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and London Fire Brigade to steward at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships 2026.

Service Stewarding duties included supervising gangways, checking tickets, and assisting the public with any related queries. UGSAS personnel worked on centre court and courts 1&2. Along with duties, students enjoyed some world class tennis and engaging with fellow personnel, learning more about roles within all the services.

Thank you to the event organisers for letting us take part in such an incredible event, and to fellow personnel for their efforts.

If you're heading to university this year, this is something you could be involved in!

Ex Home Run 2026
During June, five UGSAS students took part in Exercise Home Run. The exercise taught students about the role and hardships of the prisoners of war during WW2. It was an insightful exercise, with students learning about the Great Escape and how it was made possible. They also visited places on the long march where soldiers stopped, and learnt of digging tunnels and the German language- things that WW2 prisoners of war were forced to do at that time. Overall it was a great learning experience for all involved.

Summer Mountaineering Course
Last week, 6 students took part in the Summer Mountaineering Foundation Course (SMF) in the Grampians delivered by Sgt Boyd. Over the duration of the 5 days, students learnt the basics of using equipment, route planning, and hiking technique. The importance of pacing and timing was emphasised, especially as a relevant skill for any military environment.
Over the duration of the course, numerous Munros and Cairns were completed, including Cairn Gorm, Sgór Gaoith, and on the final expedition, Lochnagar. The penultimate day led to a night in a bothy before completing the expedition and heading home on Friday. The SMF course is a pre-requisite to the Mountain Leadership Course which builds on the skills learnt in SMF.

Leadership course
At the end of April, 6 students attended the Leadership Foundation Development Programme (LDFP) delivered by Sgt Boyd. This course taught students about leadership and gave an insight into the effectiveness of different leadership styles. The two day course included both theory and practical lessons, and had a focus on the attributes required for specific leadership types.
Leadership skills are incredibly valuable in any role within the Royal Air Force.
