Over the weekend Cadets from South East Scotland Wing Royal Air Force Air Cadets embarked on Exercise Griffin Strike, a Bronze Fieldcraft exercise designed to test and refine a wide range of skills.

Throughout the exercise, the Cadets were put through their paces in weapons handling, camouflage and concealment, sentry duties and moving effectively at night, among various other activities and challenges.

Fieldcraft exercises such as this are a brilliant way for Cadets to develop skills that will set them up for life: leadership, teamwork, communication and resilience, to name just a few.

Special thanks must, as always, go to the adult volunteers who dedicate so much of their time to ensuring the young people in their units can learn, grow and thrive safely.

Back in June we visited West Lowland Battalion Army Cadet Force on a Fieldcraft weekend at Dechmont Range in Cambuslang. Luckily the weather held up just long enough for us to get an up-close look at some of the activities Cadets take part in on these weekends and find out more about the skills and qualifications they can gain.

Thanks so much to Captain Flett, Colour Sergeant Donnan and Cadet Sergeant Murray, Cadets Fry and Joseph and Cadet Corporal Cooke for taking the time to chat with us about what they had been getting up to and enjoying most over the weekend.

Thanks so much to everyone who came along to our Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Networking Breakfast on Tuesday morning. It was lovely to meet so many new faces and see a few familiar ones, and we hope you found the briefings we delivered to be helpful as we gear up to celebrate this year’s Silver and Gold Awards.

We would also like to thank HMS Dalriada for the use of their meeting and catering facilities throughout the morning, and also our Engagement Team members Neil, Duncan and Caitlin for their support in bringing this event together.

Last Wednesday we were delighted to receive a visit to Lowland House from our Association President, Ms Moira Niven MBE.

Ms Niven, who is also the Lord-Lieutenant for West Lothian, offered her heartfelt thanks to the whole Lowland RFCA team for all they do to support Reservists and Cadets, from facilities management and funding grants to advocating for the Armed Forces Community among local employers.

Following some informal catch-ups over lunch, Ms Niven then visited each department individually for more in-depth conversations about current and future projects.

As always, it was a pleasure to have our President visit and we look forward to seeing her again, along with a number of her fellow Lord-Lieutenants, at our ERS Silver Awards event on Tuesday 29 September.

Flying the Flag for Merchant Navy Day

In honour of Merchant Navy Day (3 September), our Employer Engagement team braved the ever-changing Scottish elements to raise the Red Ensign at Lowland House.

This was done to commemorate not just the crew members of civilian fleets who lost their lives in past conflicts, but also to pay tribute to those who continue working tirelessly to keep supply lines open across the world to this day, often in the face of great adversity.

It’s hard to believe it’s been two whole weeks since we visited Glasgow & Lanarkshire Battalion ACF on their annual camp at Barry Buddon.

As part of our trip, we were lucky enough to chat with Corporal Jessica Murphy from 3 Platoon Newmains, who told us all about what she and her fellow Cadets had been getting up to at camp, the skills she’s learned in her four and a half years as an Army Cadet, and how those skills will help to shape her future.

Last Friday our Employer Engagement team headed to Edinburgh for an Armed Forces Covenant signing with Public Services Delivery Scotland - PSD Scotland.

Merging together NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) and NHS Education for Scotland, both of which had already achieved Gold Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Awards for their commitment to supporting the Armed Forces Community, the PSD Scotland team were keen to show that they would continue to honour their previous pledges under the new name.

The new Armed Forces Covenant was signed on behalf of PSD Scotland by Chief Executive Karen Reid, who commented that the organisation appreciates everything that the Armed Forces do, and how privileged the NHS is to benefit from the skills, values and experiences of all the Reservists, veterans and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers within its workforce.

Signing the Covenant on behalf of the Ministry of Defence was Wing Commander Derek Read of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, who praised PSD Scotland for reaffirming its pledges and emphasised the immense value of employer support to Reservist personnel.
