Following on from our recent coverage of The Royal Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh signing the Armed Forces Covenant, last Friday we had the pleasure of visiting The Merchants House of Glasgow for its own special signing event.

The Covenant was signed by the Lord Dean of Guild Tony McElroy on behalf of the organisation, and by Honorary Air Commodore of 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron Charles Berry on behalf of the Ministry of Defence.

Once again we were delighted to be joined by guests from both the business and military worlds, and we would like to thank everyone who came along to what we feel sure was a very enjoyable evening.

Happy Monday everyone!

We’re kicking off the week on a high note as we are very excited to announce this year’s recipients for the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Meritorious Service.

The Lord-Lieutenants’ Awards for Reservists, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) and Defence civil servants are recognised as highly prestigious accolades throughout the Armed Forces Community, and are valued immensely by those who receive them as a formal acknowledgement of their outstanding dedication to their units and their wider communities.

We look forward to celebrating with all the recipients, their families and their colleagues during the official awards presentation that will take place in tandem with our Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Silver Awards event on 29 September at the Burrell Collection.

Considering a career in the Army? Want to find out more about the travel and training opportunities such a career can offer? Well, you’re in luck!

Redford Barracks in Edinburgh is hosting a special Infantry Experience 26 Scotland on Thursday 13 August for guests aged 15-34 with an interest in careers within the British Army’s Infantry regiments. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to attend.

The event will give visitors an extensive insight into the skills and experiences they can gain as an Infantry soldier by allowing them to:

- Experience Infantry training on the indoor weapons simulator range;
- See Infantry tactics in a combat demonstration;
- Get hands-on with the latest Infantry kit and equipment;
- Spend time with serving Infantry soldiers and find out what life is really like as one of the Army’s close combat professionals.

We’ve shown you a Sea Cadets summer, we’ve shown you an Air Cadets summer, now it’s time for a look at an Army Cadets summer!

There has been no shortage of exciting activities for our Lowland Army Cadet battalions to take part in over the last month. Take for example Lothian and Borders Bn ACF’s Lieutenant Watson, who had the privilege of attending Trooping the Colour 2026 at Horse Guards Parade in London, complete with RAF Red Arrows flypast and a Royal Family appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

West Lowland Battalion Army Cadet Force are also recently returned home from their Annual Camp at Barry Buddon, which saw plenty of promotions and awards for Cadets and CFAVs alike, alongside the usual training, sports and games and, most importantly, keeping cool with an ice cream or two.

Last but not least, Cadets and CFAVs from Glasgow & Lanarkshire Battalion ACF recently set off to the Netherlands to take part in the Nijmegen Marches, the world’s largest multi-day walking event. Participants are challenged to walk up to as much as 50km per day over the four-day event, and we have no doubt the G&L team will be smashing it all the way to the finish line.

It’s not just our Sea Cadets having a blast this summer!

With such beautiful clear skies on offer, it’s no wonder the Lowland RAF Air Cadets have been busy getting their flying hours in lately.

327 Kilmarnock Sqn RAF Air Cadets set out for 4 Air Experience Flight at Glasgow Airport last week and, ably supported by the piloting instructors and ground crew, took in some absolutely stunning views of Loch Lomond.

Similarly, 2180 Galashiels Sqn RAF Air Cadets saw five of its Cadets attending 12 AEF at Leuchars Station, where they enjoyed some gorgeous views and aerial acrobatics of their own.

For many of the Cadets these were their first ever flights in the Grob Tutor T1 aircraft and, judging by all the happy faces we can see, it won’t be their last!

Our Sea Cadets are certainly making the most of summer! ☀️

Over the past couple of weeks Cadets from across the Lowlands have been keeping cool by taking part in some exciting adventures out on the water.

For members of East Kilbride Sea Cadets and Sea Cadets Edinburgh Trinity, these adventures took the form of offshore voyages: while the East Kilbride crews took in the delights of the West Coast and surrounding islands, two of Edinburgh Trinity’s Cadets joined the crew of TS John Jerwood for a two-week voyage from Dunstaffnage to Inverness.

Closer to home, Paisley Sea Cadets have been busy honing their teamwork skills with a raft-building challenge, testing their abilities to communicate with each other, solve problems and, of course, have fun test out their handcrafted vessels on the water!

As ever, none of these activities would be possible without the tireless dedication of the Cadet Force Adult Volunteers who run and support each unit.

We’re thrilled to announce that 18 Lowland organisations have been awarded this year’s Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Gold Award!

This award is the highest badge of honour available to civilian organisations that employ and support Reservists, service leavers, Cadet Force Volunteers, Veterans and their families.

Back in May we were delighted to present SRUC (Scotland's Rural College) with its Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Bronze Award during a special Business Breakfast with 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron RAuxAF.

We also had the pleasure of chatting to two SRUC staff members, HR Recruitment Advisor Michelle Gilmour, and Stuart Gray, Instructor in Agricultural Engineering and Assistant Commandant of Lothian and Borders Bn ACF, to find out what receiving the award meant for the College and for them as individuals with personal Armed Forces connections.
