A message from our CEO Lorraine McGrath following the release of the latest Scottish homeless and drug death figures this week.

Two days, two sets of figures, presented and talked about in a national context, but both entirely about individual people and families experiencing misery, harm and loss. We need to really look and put extra ordinary effort into seeing each and every one of them, and, really think about where and how we are failing them, because undoubtedly it's the system, the attitudes and discrimination they experience and our lack of action at the first point of concern that drives these figures and the growing misery we are investing huge sums in maintaining. We are way too accepting of homelessness and drug related harms and loss in Scotland today. It will take every part of our communities, services and systems to build towards a country where we do not accept either as normal or unavoidable.

I am enormously proud of every member of the Simon Community Scotland team and the way every day they work hard to create the opportunities for people to find better in their life, reduce the harm that life has delivered them and to make the best of what the system has to offer them. We absolutely believe and see every day just how amazing the people we support are, when they are offered the right care, support and safety to find their way out of harm and misery.

We live in a caring country, we need to deliver that care not just at the point of crisis but in ways that truly prevent anyone's life circumstances leading them there. With the right interventions that protect communities, families and each person from harms of all kinds .

Almost 41,500 made homelessness applications in the last year.

We are helping hundreds of people affected by homelessness every single day and night through our street teams, hubs, helplines, streetreads library, emergency and supported accommodation services, outreach and housing first teams and our own SCS Homes. Our street teams are out. We engage with people, build trust and help people get the support they need.

The need for safe places and support for people experiencing homelessness is growing and we are looking for new people who are full of energy and compassion to join our team. There are a variety of full-time and relief roles across our Edinburgh, Glasgow, North Lanarkshire and Perthshire services and also in our Head Office.

For 60 years, Simon Community Scotland has been delivering safe places, support, and hope to people experiencing homelessness. This year marks our 60th anniversary, however this is not a cause for celebration. The need for our experience and expertise is greater than ever.

This is why we are launching our first ever virtual challenge and we need you to join us.

We are challenging our incredible supporters to run, jog, or walk 60 miles in 60-days - between 10th October (World Homeless Day) and 10th December. How you complete the miles is entirely up to you. You can do a couple of miles a day, a longer walk at the weekend, or smash it out in a few weeks. Like our support, we want our challenge to be inclusive and tailored to suit you. You could also wheel, cycle, skate or swim. You can choose.

All ages and all fitness levels are welcome. SIGN UP FOR FREE as an individual, as a family, a group of friends or as a workplace.
