🏦 Glasgow is rich in Architectural gems, including a monument where capital convicts were hanged.

A unique tour exploring the history of justice ⚖️ in the city, going back hundreds of years, also features the curious case of ‘Number 7 Blythswood Square' - home of Madeleine Smith who was acquitted of murder by poisoning her lover Pierre L’Angelier.

🏃‍♀️‍➡️ These are just some of the unusual highlights featured on the 5k Glasgow Legal Walk, beginning at Glasgow Sheriff Court before finishing with a reception at the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow (RFPG) building.

📅 It is a popular date in the legal calendar and a great opportunity to raise money for The Access To Justice Foundation while catching up with friends or meeting someone new in the legal sector.

This year’s event on 30 September will see Sheriff Stuart Reid (Temporary Sheriff Principal of Glasgow and Strathkelvin) giving the pre-walk address from the steps of the Sheriff Court.

Former Royal Faculty Dean Austin Lafferty, who will provide a guided tour of some the city’s historical landmarks, revealed:

↪️ "You get a real sense for the city while doing the Legal Walk and how much history there is, not just legally but also socially.
↪️ “The walk is not for athletes or people with climbing boots, it’s an old-fashioned walk and talk with friends and a chance to meet new people.
↪️ “Lawyers, sheriff clerks, Advocates, students, paralegals and anyone really who has a connection to the law can come along. You can even bring along your pet dog if you like.”

The Glasgow Legal Walk – sponsored by The Law Society of Scotland and the RFPG – is a focal point for members of the legal community and supporters of access to justice to walk in aid of the legal advice charity sector in Scotland.

🏃‍♀️‍➡️ Around 40 people took part in the Glasgow walk last year and it is hoped a similar number will come along at the end of the month.

Similar walks are taking place in Paisley, Aberdeen and Dundee to raise awareness of the essential work being done by The Access To Justice Foundation.

RARE ROYAL CHARTER FROM THE REIGN OF ROBERT THE BRUCE GOES ON PUBLIC DISPLAY

📜 A rare document housed inside the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow will go on public display as part of the Doors Open Day festival 📜

THE ROYAL CHARTER is one of the oldest documents in the Royal Faculty’s Hill Collection, which records the transfer of lands including Moidart, Arisaig and Morar from Christiana of the Isles to Artúr Caimbéal (Arthur Campbell).
Christiana was the only legitimate child of the Hebridean nobleman Ailean mac Ruaidhrí and was connected to Robert the Bruce by family and marriage. After her father’s lands passed to her half-brother Ruaidhrí, Christiana later sought to establish her own claim to them. Caimbéal was an associate of Robert I, and it is believed the charter had royal approval. In return for the lands, he was required to provide a boat and men for the King’s army, strengthening both Christiana’s claim and Robert’s control in western Scotland.

The document, thought to date back to around 1314, is one of many other rare items going on display to the public in The RFPG on Saturday 19th September. In addition, visitors can view:

🔨 An oak gavel – made from wood which formed part of the roof of Glasgow Cathedral for more than 700 years. Presented to The RFPG in 1915, the gavel is made from oak grown on the shores of Loch Lomond since the 11th century.

👨‍⚖️The robes of Supreme Court Judge Lord Gill, recently donated to the Royal Faculty by Lord Gill himself, will be exhibited for the first time. The robes (one worn when sitting as a criminal judge in the High Court of Justiciary and the other during his time as Lord Justice Clerk).

📖 One of the earliest comic magazines dating back to 1825 will also be on display. First published on 11 June 1825, The Glasgow Looking Glass was a fortnightly satirical magazine printed in Glasgow.

📣 RFPG Chief Executive John McKenzie said:

“We are privileged to be custodians of some of the country’s rarest artefacts, with some dating back more than 700 years. We are fortunate to work in one of Glasgow’s most historic and illustrious buildings and hope the public will enjoy taking a look at a sample of these while touring the Royal Faculty.”

Walkers assemble at the front steps of Glasgow Sheriff Court at 5pm for registration & an address by Temporary Sheriff Principal, Sheriff Stuart Reid. Following a group photo, the walk will then set off at 5.30pm led by former Dean of the Faculty, Austin Lafferty, who will guide you through the legal landmarks of the city. The walk (around 1 hour) will end in a post-walk reception held in the hall of the stunning RFPG building where you can enjoy some well-deserved refreshments and chat with your fellow walkers.

🥇 Fresh from gaining an Advanced Higher in Art, Past Dean of the Royal Faculty, Austin Lafferty is looking forward to exhibiting some of his work at our popular ‘Creativity in the Law’ event.
Two years ago, Austin Lafferty made the bold decision to become a part-time student to learn more about the techniques of being an artist. 🖼️
This ‘super-charged’ his enjoyment for painting and drawing and he has since amassed a wealth of artwork since throwing himself into his studies.
Austin took part in the inaugural Creativity in the Law event in 2024 and is looking forward to returning in April 2027.

↪️ He said: “I had an interest in drawing and painting at school in the 70’s and although I was unable to fit it into my regular studies my art teacher still allowed me to sit the O-grade exam. However, I was unable to go on to do the Higher.
“So, when I semi-retired a few years ago I took the opportunity to do my Higher at the Anniesland Campus at Glasgow Clyde College in 2024/25.
"I decided to do the Advanced Higher the following year. I achieved an A and doing both courses has provided me with a huge portfolio of work which I’m looking forward to exhibiting at the Creativity in the Law event next year.”

🙌 Set to be the biggest edition of the exhibition to date, the RFPG is now inviting submissions from creative legal professionals and law students across Scotland.
After qualifying as a solicitor in 1981, Austin often turned to his creative instincts as an outlet to deal with the stresses of the job. On semi-retiring a few years ago, Austin grasped the opportunity to spend more time brushing up on his love of portraiture, working in graphite pencil, coloured pencil, and acrylic paint mainly.
↪️ Austin added: "It would be great to have as many people as possible taking part and coming along to view people’s work.
“There is a great ocean of creativity out there amongst lawyers and the wider legal community and I’m sure next year’s 'Creativity in the Law' event will be another great success.”

The event is open to both RFPG members and non-members. Previous editions of Creativity in the Law have featured an impressive range of musicians, including acoustic singer-songwriters and string quartets. ✨
They have been joined by photographers 📷, painters, sculptors and even a video game designer. This year's event will also raise funds for Shelter, supporting the charity's vital work tackling homelessness and housing insecurity.
