Bail Agreement Pro Forma – Glasgow Sheriff Court

Glasgow Sheriff Court has asked us to bring to members’ attention the availability of a bail agreement pro forma, which solicitors are encouraged to use where appropriate.

The pro forma is intended to support the efficient conduct of custody court business. Its use may help cases to be dealt with more expeditiously and contribute to reducing overall finishing times for the custody court.

Copies of the pro forma are available within the custody courts for solicitors to complete.

The Royal Faculty is delighted to announce the return of Creativity in the Law on Thursday 29 April 2027 – and this promises to be the biggest showcase yet.

Whether you're a painter, photographer, writer, musician, maker, crafter, or have another creative passion, we'd love to hear from you. Open to both RFPG members and non-members, the event celebrates the incredible talent within Scotland's legal community and provides a unique opportunity to exhibit your work, perform, connect with colleagues, and showcase the creative side of the profession.

Previous events have featured everything from painting, photography and sculpture to stained glass, bookbinding, resin art, video game demonstrations, and live musical performances. Whatever your creative outlet (no matter how unique) we'd be delighted to welcome you.

This year's event will also raise funds for Shelter, supporting its vital work tackling homelessness and housing insecurity.

📢 Farewell Reception for Sheriff Principal Aisha Anwar

The Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow is delighted to share an invitation from Sheriff Principal Aisha Anwar to our members.

As she prepares to take up her appointment as a Senator of the College of Justice, the Sheriff Principal is hosting a farewell reception to thank everyone who has contributed to making Glasgow Sheriff Court "Scotland's best Sheriff Court".

The event is an opportunity to recognise the collective efforts of the local legal profession, Procurators Fiscal, court clerks and court staff whose commitment and professionalism support the work of the court every day.

The reception will include a buffet and refreshments, followed by brief tributes and words of thanks from the Sheriff Principal.

📢 More people than ever before will now be eligible for support from the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow's James Caldwell Bequest Fund.

Following a review by the Royal Faculty's Charitable Funds Committee, the Fund's charitable purposes have been expanded so it can now support not only current and former members of the Royal Faculty and their families, but also:

✔️ Individuals who would be eligible to become members of the Royal Faculty, where financial assistance is needed.

✔️ Those studying, researching or training to become lawyers in Scotland through educational and training grants.

For many aspiring lawyers, financial pressures can be a real barrier to opportunities and career progression. By broadening the Fund's remit, the Royal Faculty is opening the door to supporting more people across Scotland's legal community while continuing a charitable tradition that stretches back more than 350 years.

As one recent recipient put it:
"Without the Fund's generous financial assistance, [my studies] would not have been possible. I am deeply grateful for the investment in my future."

If you think you (or someone you know) may now be eligible, it's well worth taking a look at the criteria and applying. All applications are treated in the strictest confidence.

The Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow operates a number of charitable funds for a variety of purposes. The Benevolent Fund is constituted by Resolution of the Royal Faculty and the remaining Funds by trust deeds.

📢 AI is entering the Scottish courtroom to stay.

That is the clear message from Lord Pentland's landmark address to the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow.

As Scotland's most senior judge, Lord Pentland set out what is probably the most authoritative statement yet on the role of artificial intelligence in the Scottish justice system.

His message is both reassuring and challenging.
⚖️ AI will not replace judges or lawyers.
⚖️ But it will become an increasingly important part of legal practice and the administration of justice.

Perhaps the most striking passage is this:
"All judicial officeholders must be ready, able to understand it and make appropriate use of it. That inevitably means the profession must adapt... You may not be interested in AI, but AI will soon be interested in you."

The speech highlighted how AI is already being explored within the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service to support functions such as transcription, summarisation, translation and online civil procedures, while also emphasising the importance of safeguarding judicial independence, professional responsibility and public confidence.

For anyone practising law in Scotland - or anyone interested in the future of AI in the legal profession - this is essential reading.

It was a very nice touch by Lord Reed to acknowledge and thank the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow during the Supreme Court proceedings in Barton Turns Developments Limited (Appellant) v Treadwell (Respondent) UKSC/2026/0008, when the Court sat in Glasgow earlier this May.

These moments of recognition matter - they reflect the continued importance of the legal community in Scotland and the longstanding contribution of the Royal Faculty to the administration of justice.
