Today’s featured Compass Foster Parent is Amanda.
Amanda believes that fostering isn’t about being perfect - it’s about helping young people believe in themselves.
“Be your best self and shine,” she tells them every day.
One young person came in Amanda's care alone, uncertain about what lay ahead and unable to speak English. Everything was new and overwhelming - language, culture, even simple routines. Amanda’s focus was simple. Help him feel safe. Help him feel valued. Help him feel part of a family.
She celebrated every small win: understanding school reports, learning to navigate everyday life, and even sending pictures of the meals he cooked to his mum in Iraq so she could see how well he was doing.
Through patience, encouragement, and belief, he grew in confidence. Today, he lives independently and runs his own business in Greater London.
For Amanda, that is what fostering is really about. “It’s not just about what they achieve,” Amanda says, “it’s about who they become - their confidence, kindness, and values.”
Her advice to anyone thinking about fostering is refreshingly simple: show up, listen, care, and believe in who a young person can become. Because sometimes, having one person believe in you can change everything.
"If you can offer a safe home, consistency, and belief … you can change a young person’s life.”
