The Colour of Pomegranates is a monthly creative group for women in Bootle Library, which we run alongside Found In Translation, our ESOL/international reading group! Our next session takes place on Thursday 15th October - and is open to all (not just women).

Together we've read poetry, letters and prose in languages ranging from Portuguese to Japanese discussing the context, history and culture around them, reading and listening together. There's no pressure to read aloud, you can listen and read for yourself for a moment of pause and engaging with new and exciting writing. Open to everyone including those with English as an additional language, those studying ESOL courses or anyone interested in reading international literature.

Our next slow down social is Saturday 17th 11am-1pm and will be botanical casting with This is a free workshop for 18 to 35 year olds. Want to know a little more about the artist and the art of botanical casting?

Following 20 years on her artistic journey, Janet's practice is rooted in close observation of plant structures and the translation of living botanical forms into sculptural works. Using traditional casting techniques with clay and plaster, she records the fine details of leaves, stems, and flowers, preserving their physical presence as sculptural herbaria reliefs. As the process voids colour it allows the viewer to read the architectural structure of the plants. Her work is informed by research into plant history, folklore, medicinal use, and toxicology along with research of site-specific locations. Rather than treating plants purely as aesthetic subjects, she considers them as carriers of layered meaning shaped by science, culture, and human interaction. Janet's approach deconstructs the plants to construct the story 🌿

Congratulations to the winner of the Sefton Slams poetry competition 2026 - Marion Kockelbergh. 🏅⭐✍️
Her poem, "The Fabric of Wonder" was an emotional and poignant journey that captivated the audience. Thank you so much to all the wonderful poets who participated, everyone who participated did an incredible job!

The Sefton Slams poetry competition is an annual event that celebrates poetry and coming together as a creative community. Each year has a different theme. The theme for 2026 was Wonder, hosted by the lovely Mandy Coe.

If you are interested in writing poetry, why not join Gillian at Crosby the first Wednesday of the month? The Crosby Poetry Group meets at the Poetry Corner from 2.30 - 4.00 pm.

Bootle library also has the Bootle Writers' Group in the pod. Join Alison every fortnight, 10.30 - 12.30pm.

The next talk at Crosby Library is “The True Story of Titanic’s no 8 Lifeboat” on October 14th at 2pm, all are welcome and the talk is free! ⛵

The speaker Bernard Nevin talks about RMS Titanic in 1912 and how Lady Noelle Rothes, a young English aristocrat aided a White Star crewman, Tom Jones, in steering their lifeboat No 8 to safety and away from the plunging liner, they would remain in contact for many years following the tragedy.

📚 Excitement is building for Southport’s free family festival Books Alive! as locations for The Jolly Postman Book Trail are revealed and a packed programme of family events at The Atkinson is now available to book ahead of Books Alive! taking over the town from 24th to 31st October.

The Festival of Stories programme is also now live, with dozens of free events taking place at The Atkinson and Southport Library on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th October.

In partnership with Children’s Books North Network, Festival of Stories brings together celebrated children’s authors and illustrators for two days of interactive storytelling, creativity and family-friendly experiences, hosted by CBeebies star and author Katy Ashworth.

The programme is organised around three themes: Be Inspired, Be Creative and Be Part of It.

Families can meet Fantastically Great Women author-illustrator Kate Pankhurst, draw along with Lydia Monks, bestselling illustrator of What the Ladybird Heard, and sit back and enjoy Altru Drama’s unique performance of Hansel & Gretel, with many more events taking place across the two-day programme. The full line-up of authors/illustrators, programmed by Children’s Books North Network, is: Lydia Monks, Solomey Doku, Natalie Denny, Metaphrog, Dapo Adeola, Kate Pankhurst, Ruth Awolola, Ashley Thorpe, Gabrielle Kent and Joseph Coelho.

There will also be free craft workshops in The Atkinson’s Art Gallery, while the Foyer will host a special installation Noisy Noise Noise, a playful sound library featuring more than 90 books that trigger weird, wonderful and occasionally rude noises, commissioned by The Cultural Hub and produced by Activate Performing Arts, producers of Inside Out Dorset.

All Festival of Stories events are free to attend, but advance booking is required due to limited availability. Free tickets can be booked at VisitSouthport.com or through The Atkinson Box Office.
